SUBJECT: UNSATISFACTORY CAMSHAFT


AND CAMSHAFT FOLLOWER LIFE
PROBLEM:
Several customers have experienced spalling of camshaft lobes and
followers on 3500B machine engines. These failures are generally
discovered at about 7000 service hours with some failures beginning at
as little as 2500 hours. The spalling begins on the injector lobe near
the top on the deceleration side. The illustration shows an example of
the spalling. The followers and lobes will show pitting beginning at t
edge of the roller/lobe interface. The typical symptoms of the spallin
follow: engine miss, injection duration change, and high iron in oil
samples. All 3500B engines are at risk, but EPA Tier 1 certified
machines seem to have a higher failure rate.

SOLUTION:
The Lafayette Engine Center is aggressively investigating the cause an
solution of this abnormal early hour wear. Several causes are suspecte
including oil quality, high loading of the follower/camshaft and oil
flow. Testing is underway to determine the complete solution.

Field data shows there is a correlation between extended oil change


intervals and early cam wear. Customers should strictly follow the
guidelines for oil change intervals in the Operation and Maintenance
Manual. In addition, some machines may need to have oil change interva
reduced further based on Scheduled Oil Sample data. Follow the
recommendations for oil condemning that are provided in "Optimizing Oi
Change Intervals", PEDP8025. Soot levels should also be monitored
closely. As a temporary guideline, do not exceed 120% soot saturation
the oil. Cat oil or a premium grade API approved CH-4 oil should be us
to maximize camshaft life.

Any 3500B machine engine being serviced after 7500 hours of service
should be inspected for camshaft spalling. Experience has shown that t
risk of a hard failure varies, with some engines running in excess of
2500 hours with spalled camshafts. Other cases have resulted in valve

train damage, which propagated throughout the engine, sometimes


resulting in block damage. Dealers and customers should assess risk on
case-by-case basis. A camshaft that shows wear similar to, or worse th
that in the illustration, should be replaced as soon as possible. The
LEC service engineers will be available to help the dealer in the risk
assessment process. Please contact your product analyst for more detai
