4 LAB EXPERIMENT

OBJECT:
To study the transient analysis of RL circuit in Multisim.

LEARNING OUTCOME:
In this lab, students will be able to understand:
 Transient analysis of RL circuit using advance engineering software.

TRANSIENT ANALYSIS OF CIRCUIT ELEMENT:

RESISTOR:
As has been studied before, the application of a voltage V to a resistor (with resistance R in
Ohms), results in a current I, according to the formula:
V
I=
R
The current response to voltage change is instantaneous; a resistor has no transient response.

INDUCTOR:
A change in voltage across an inductor (with inductance L in Henrys) does not result in an
instantaneous change in the current through it. The I-V relationship is described with the
equation:
di
V =L
dt
This relationship implies that the voltage across an inductor approaches zero as the current in
the circuit reaches a steady value. This means that in a DC circuit, an inductor will eventually
act like a short circuit.

METHOD:
TRANSIENT ANALYZER:
The transient analyzer described is a simple and reliable electronic device which operates by
generating a number of pulses exactly equal to the number of cycles required for the output
current or voltage of a magnetic amplifier to change from its initial value to a predetermined
value.
In electrical engineering and mechanical engineering, a transient response is the response of a
system to a change from an equilibrium or a steady state. The transient response is not
necessarily tied to abrupt events but to any event that affects the equilibrium of the system.
In, Multisim 14.0 we use transient analyzer to observe the response of RL circuit.
Open Multisim.
Select components.
Select step voltage source.

Go to simulation.
Select transient analysis option.

Now run the simulation.
