Issue and Reason for the Project
● The exact costs of homelessness are not clear. There are many estimates on the
cost of:
○ Medical care/Emergency Services
○ Jailing/Court costs

● New Hope wants to secure more private investors, foundations, and corporate
support with the potential of gaining even more governmental support
● Know humanitarian benefits of organization, but want to quantify economic benefits

Scope
The scope of our project is to collect existing studies and data on the topic of the economic benefits of expanding

permanent supportive housing programs, summarize all the information we collect including an assessment of each

information source, and prepare a set of deliverables for our client.

Phase 1: Literature Review
Obtain applicable data and research from academic literature, government data, and news sources.

Phase 2: Data Analysis


Extract key points from aggregate data that has already been collected. Analyze what the data tells us about the benefits of
permanent supportive housing by implementing a ranking system for different data sources.

Phase 3: Prepare Materials


Combine the information we have prepared and collected into an executive summary, report, and presentation to give to
client.

● Analyzed 72 articles to extract data about the benefits of supportive housing
and to quantify the costs of homelessness
● Adopted a ranking system
○ High: Published articles with more than 10 citations and a similar location to Houston or
government data
○ Medium: Published articles with less than 10 citations and/or a location different than
Houston or news articles from reputable organizations and sources
○ Low: News articles without sources or from not well-known organizations
● Preliminary examination of data
○ Averaged values for costs
