Definition :

v Hydrocephalus is a condition in which there is an

accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within
the brain.
Ø Anatomy
Ø Etiology

Increased CSF volume may be due to :

Ø Overproduction (choroid plexus tumors).

Ø Obstruction of flow (non-communicating / obstructive).

Ø Reduced CSF resorption (communicating non-obstructive).

Ø Classification

Ø Non-Communicating Hydrocephalus.

Ø Communicating Hydrocephalus.
Ø Non-communicating
hydrocephalus

- Etiology : Obstruction at :

1-Foramen of Monro.

2- Cerebral Aqueduct.

3-Fourth Ventricle.
Ø Communicating hydrocephalus

- No obstruction to CSF flow but poor resorption through arachnoid granulations secondary to :

1-Post hemorrhagic (especially SAH)

2-Bacterial Meningitis

3-Surgery

4-Venous Thrombosis
Ø Clinical manifestations

• Common symptoms of hydrocephalus between different age groups :

1- Headache

2-Nausea and vomiting

3-Blurred or double vision

4-Inability to concentrate
Radiological findings of hydrocephalus
•Communicating •Non-communicating
hydrocephalus hydrocephalus
• All ventricles are dilated • One or more dilated and
others ventricles are normal
The treatment :
• ventriculoperitoneal or • endoscopic third
ventriculoatrial shunt: ventriculostomy (ETV)
