SALUT Planetary Boundaries & Sustainability

Part I: In this SALUT exercise you are tasked with discussing the concept of the Earth’s
Planetary Boundaries. Using the SALUT slides, embedded videos, and attached article, address
the following questions. Answer either yes or no and justify that answer.

Are we beginning to exceed the Planetary Boundaries of Earth’s biosphere (total sum of all
biomes)?

No □ Justification.

If yes, should it be left to individual humans actively reduce their footprint and if so, how?

If yes, should government step aside and allow the free market to work out solutions through
technology and development of renewable energy sources?

If yes, should governments, through law, anticipate ecosystem breakdown and impose solutions
through regulations and application of consequences for noncompliance?

Part II: Read the attached article Threats to the Biosphere: Eight Interactive Global Crises and
then describe which of the eight mentioned global crises poise the greatest threat to exceeding
the Earth’s Biosphere. If you believe none then state that but justify your answers. Reference
the article in your answer.
