Homework #6: Due Fri., May. 20 at class.

1. A message signal m(t) with

2
𝛼2
S𝑚 (𝑓) = [ ] , α = 3000π
(2𝜋𝑓)2 + 𝛼 2

DSB-SC modulates a carrier of 100kHz. Assume an ideal channel with H𝑐 (𝑓) = 10−3
and the channel noise PSD 𝑆𝑛 (𝑓) = 2 × 10−9 . The transmitted power is required to
be 1kW.

(a) Determine the post-detection SNR including the effect of de-emphasis filter.

(b) Determine the SNR figure of merit.

2. A white process of PSD 𝑁𝑜 ⁄2 is transmitted through a band-pass filter H(f).

Represent the filter output n(t) in terms of quadrature components, and determine
𝑆𝐼 (𝑓), 𝑆𝑄 (𝑓), ̅̅̅̅
𝑛𝐼 2 , ̅̅̅̅̅
𝑛𝑄 2 and ̅̅̅
𝑛2 when the center frequency used in this representation
is 100 kHz (i,e., 𝑓𝑐 = 100 × 103 )

3. In coherent detection of a binary PPM, a half-width pulse 𝑝0 (𝑡) is transmitted with

different delays of binary digit “0” and “1” over 0 ≤ t ≤ 𝑇𝑏 . Note that

𝑝0 (t) = u(t) − u(t − 𝑇𝑏 ⁄2)

The binary PPM transmission is to simply transmit

𝑝0 (t), if "0"is sent

𝑝0 (t − 𝑇𝑏 ⁄2), if "0"is sent

The channel noise is AWGN with spectrum level of 𝑁𝑜 ⁄2.

(a) Determine the optimum receiver architecture for this binary system. Sketch the
optimum receiver filter response in the time domain.

Homework #6: Due Fri., May. 20 at class.

(b) If P[“0”] = 0.4 and P[“1”] = 0.6, find the optimum threshold and the resulting
receiver bit error rate.

(c) The receiver was misinformed and believes that P[“0”] = 0.5 = P[“1”]. It hence
designed a receiver based on this information. Find the true probability of error
when, in fact, the actual prior probabilities are P[“0] – 0.4 and P[“1”] = 0.6.
Compare this result with the result in part (b).

4. In coherent schemes, a small pilot is added for synchronization. Because the pilot
does not carry information, it causes degradation in power efficiency. Consider a
coherent PSK that uses the following two pulses of duration 𝑇𝑏 :

p(t) = A√1 − 𝑚2 cos 𝜔𝑐 𝑡 + Am sin 𝜔𝑐 𝑡

𝑞(t) = −A√1 − 𝑚2 cos 𝜔𝑐 𝑡 + Am sin 𝜔𝑐 𝑡

Where Am sin 𝜔𝑐 𝑡 is the pilot. Show that when the channel noise is White Gaussian,

2𝐸𝑏 (1 − 𝑚2 )
𝑃𝑏 = 𝑄 [√ ]
𝑁𝑜

5. An eight-signal configuration in a two-dimensional space is shown in below. Choose

𝜑1 (𝑡) = √2⁄𝑇 cos 𝜔𝑐 𝑡 and 𝜑2 (𝑡) = √2⁄𝑇 sin 𝜔𝑐 𝑡. The noise is AWGN with PSD
𝑁𝑜 ⁄2.

(a) Draw the optimum receiver structure and write down the decision rule.

(b) Determine the decision region and the error probability 𝑃𝑒𝑀 of the optimum
receiver as a function of 𝐸𝑏 ⁄𝑁𝑜 .
