CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

1. Background of study

Language is a human system of communication that uses arbitrary signals, such as

voice sounds, gestures, and/or written symbols. The study of language is called linguistics.

English becomes the most essential language in the world. Almost all the people
frpm many different countries around the world use it to communicate. The area of English
has always become a special interest. It’s because of the importance of English in any scope
of our lives.

Linguistics is the scientific study of language, and involves an analysis of language

form, language meaning, and language in context.

Morphology is the system of categories and rules involved in word formation.

Matthews (1991:3) states that, “Morphology, therefore, is the simply a term for that branch
of linguistics which is concerned with the „form of words‟ in different uses and
contraction”.
Mulyana (2007: 5), states that the term morphology "is derived from the English
language morphology, meaning that the branch of linguistics that studies on the structure or
parts of words grammatically”. In the past, science is better known as morphemics, namely
the study of morpheme. However, along with the development and dynamics of language, the
term is more popular then morphology.
Bauer (1988:12) said that derivational affixes are part of morphology lesson. In
linguistics, derivational affix is the word-formation that creates the new meaning and part
speech by addition. For example; the affixes which form noun that obtained from verb,
adverb that obtained from adjective, verb that obtained from adjective, and adjective that
obtained from noun. “If an affix changes the part of speech of the base, it is derivational”
(Bauer, 1988:12). Affixes are divided into three kinds. They are prefix, infix, and suffix. A
prefix is placed at the beginning of a word to modify or changes its meaning. An infix is
inserted within a root or stem. A suffix is an affix attached after a root (or stem or base) like –ly, -
er,-or, -ist, -s, -ing and -ed. For example: kind-ly, wait-er, book-s, walk-ed, etc (Katamba, 1994:44).
2. Research Questions
1) What is the differences and similarities affixes suffix -ance, and –ence Novel
Demian?
2) What is the function suffix -ance, and –ence in Novel Demian?

3. Aim of the Research

1) To clarify the differences and similarities the usage between affixes suffix -
ance, and –ence in Novel Demian.
2) To analyze the function suffix -ance and –ence in Novel Demian.

4. Significant of the Research

This research is hoped to be useful to:
Encourage the English teacher to know a morphological analysis of derivational
affixes suffix ance, and ist in . Help the students to learn a morphological analysis of
derivational affixes suffix -ance and -ence,.

5. Clarification of Key Term

There are some frequently used terminologies in this research, as the following:
1. According to Wikipedia In linguistics, morphology (/mɔːrˈfɒlədʒi/) is the study of
words, how they are formed, and their relationship to other words in the same
language. It analyzes the structure of words and parts of words, such as stems,
root words, prefixes, and suffixes. Morphology also looks at parts of speech,
intonation and stress, and the ways context can change a word's pronunciation and
meaning. Morphology differs from morphological typology, which is the
classification of languages based on their use of words and lexicology, which is
the study of words and how they make up a language's vocabulary
2. According to SIL.org derivational affix is an affix by means of which one word is
formed (derived) from another. The derived word is often of a different word class
from the original.
3. Affix is a group of letters that are added to the beginning or the end of a root word
that can change the word's meaning (study.com).
4. A suffix (Katamba, 1994: 44) stated that “suffix is an affix attached after a root
(or stem or base) like –ly, -er,-or, -ist, -s, -ing and -ed. For example: kind-ly, wait-
er, book-s, walk-ed, etc”.
5. -ance is a suffix used to form nouns either from adjectives in -ant or from verbs:
brilliance; appearance.
6. -ence is a suffix added to adjectives, usually in place of -ent, to form nouns
referring to states, qualities, attitudes, or behaviour. For example, 'affluence' is the
state of being affluent.
