I. TITLE: Optimal Management of Endometriosis and Pain

AUTHOR: Camran Nezhat, et. al
SOURCE: Most Popular Articles: Obstetrics & Gynecology (lww.com)
YEAR OF PUBLICATION: 2019

II. SUMMARY:
Endometriosis is a lifelong disease that can affect almost every organ in the body. The
hormonal imbalance and the pro-inflammatory milieu alter neuronal signaling systems, which can
alter pain processing. Although medical treatment can provide temporary relief, most patients can
achieve long-term sustained pain relief when it is combined with surgical intervention. Owing to
its complexity, there is an ongoing debate about how to optimally manage endometriosis-
associated pain. It is believed that optimal management for this condition requires possible egg
preservation in affected young patients with and without endometriomas, preoperative medical
suppression to inhibit ovulation and to avoid removal of functional cysts that might look like
endometriomas, and postoperative hormonal suppression to decrease recurrence, but this
treatment should be modified according to disease severity, symptoms, and fertility goals.
All in all, an individualized approach is required for the initial pharmacologic plan, and this
should be included in the perioperative treatment plan. Although rare, the risk of cancer arising
from endometriosis warrants close monitoring. The complex and multifactorial nature of
endometriosis requires a multidisciplinary approach to treatment. A combination of medical,
surgical, psychotherapeutic, and alternative treatments can improve quality of life for women who
suffer from endometriosis. Currently available knowledge and advanced surgical techniques can
be used to reduce the torment and suffering of those afflicted with endometriosis.

III. NURSING IMPLICATIONS

a. To Nursing Practice
The etiology and physiology are poorly understood, that often frustrates clinicians
and patients. It’s implication to nursing practice involves the education about endometriosis
and its physical and psychological implications. It improves how nurses can be aware in such
priorities to include in improved services and as a therapeutic strategy that needs to be
assessed in different settings.
b. To Nursing Education
The article adds new knowledge for us nursing students and has a positive effect in
nursing education to be used as a relevant reference and source of information. It gives a
better perspective and evaluation on how endometriosis can be treated. Mainly that
endometriosis is like a woman’s menstrual cycle, that a person would think that their pain is
normal, when it may actually be caused by endometriosis or by another medical condition.

c. To Nursing Research
The study is very important and beneficial in nursing research, it can be used as a
review and guidance for us nursing student in conducting our own research paper to provide
an update in different alternatives, to bring a new perspective of nursing care, and to generate
interventions for the management of Endometriosis and it’s underlying risk factors because
the data’s in this study helps us and other researchers to dig-up more effective ways to
improve the services and nursing interventions in giving safe quality care and addressing the
patient’s needs. Future researchers should focus on generating effective interventions to
reduce and prevent complications after surgery.

IV. PERSONAL INSIGHTS

As we have read in the article, we strongly agree with the article as it discussed
the crucial important points about endometriosis and the certain steps appear to reduce the
odds of this struggle that every woman is dealing with. This article might help us in the future
when we will be exposed to clinical duties since it gave us a glimpse of what endometriosis is all
about and some of the directions on how to manage patients with this disease. It can also help us
to share this information to aid the lack of knowledge of other people about this disease.
