Introduction
If you are an aspiring Data Analyst / Data Scientist, am sure you know that Data Wrangling
is one of the most crucial steps for any Data Science or Machine Learning project and it’s the
longest too.

Python has a powerful and most popular package ‘Pandas’ built on top of Numpy which has
the implementation of many data objects and data operations. Pandas is one of the most
famous data science tools and it’s definitely a game-changer for cleaning, manipulating, and
analyzing data.

In this article, we will explore two of the most important data structures of pandas:

1. Series

2. DataFrame

We will also perform hands-on Data Analysis on an interesting dataset on movies. We will
learn some of the most useful operations and functionalities that pandas offer by directly
analyzing real data

Python is a great language for doing data analysis, primarily because of the fantastic
ecosystem of data-centric Python packages. Pandas is one of those packages and makes
importing and analyzing data much easier.

Pandas aims to integrate the functionality of NumPy and matplotlib to give you a convenient

tool for data analytics and visualization. Besides the integration,  it also makes the usage far
more better.

In this blog, I’ll give you a list of useful pandas snippets that can be reused over and over
again. These will definitely save you some time that you may otherwise need to skim through
the comprehensive Pandas docs.

The data structures in Pandas are capable of holding elements of any type: Series,
DataFrame.

As we have a basic understanding of the different data structures in Pandas, let’s explore the
fun and interesting ‘IMDB-movies-dataset’ and get our hands dirty by performing practical
data analysis on real data.

It is an open-source dataset and you can download it from this link.

What’s more fun than performing hands-on data analysis?

So put on your hats as a Data Analyst/ Data Scientist and let’s GET.SET.GO

We will read the data from the .csv file and perform the following basic operations on movies
data

1. Read data
2. View the data
3. Understand some basic information about the data
4. Data Selection – Indexing and Slicing data
5. Data Selection – Based on Conditional filtering
6. Groupby operations
7. Sorting operation
8. Dealing with missing values
9. Dropping columns and null values
10. Apply( ) functions

Life cycle of Data Analytics with Pandas:

The Data analytic lifecycle is designed for Big Data problems and data science projects. The
cycle is iterative to represent real project. To address the distinct requirements for performing
analysis on Big Data, step – by – step methodology is needed to organize the activities and
tasks involved with acquiring, processing, analyzing, and repurposing data.

Phases of Data Analytics with Pandas:

Phase 1: Discovery –
 The data science team learn and investigate the problem.
 Develop context and understanding.
 Come to know about data sources needed and available for the project.
 The team formulates initial hypothesis that can be later tested with data.

Phase 2: Data Preparation –

 Steps to explore, preprocess, and condition data prior to modeling and analysis.
 It requires the presence of an analytic sandbox, the team execute, load, and transform,
to get data into the sandbox.
 Data preparation tasks are likely to be performed multiple times and not in predefined
order.
 Several tools commonly used for this phase are – Hadoop, Alpine Miner, Open
Refine, etc.

Phase 3: Model Planning –

 Team explores data to learn about relationships between variables and subsequently,
selects key variables and the most suitable models.

 In this phase, data science team develop data sets for training, testing, and production
purposes.
 Team builds and executes models based on the work done in the model planning
phase.
 Several tools commonly used for this phase are – Matlab, STASTICA.

Phase 4: Model Building –

 Team develops datasets for testing, training, and production purposes.
 Team also considers whether its existing tools will suffice for running the models or
if they need more robust environment for executing models.
 Free or open-source tools – Rand PL/R, Octave, WEKA.
 Commercial tools – Matlab , STASTICA.

Phase 5: Communication Results –

 After executing model team need to compare outcomes of modeling to criteria
established for success and failure.
 Team considers how best to articulate findings and outcomes to various team
members and stakeholders, taking into account warning, assumptions.
 Team should identify key findings, quantify business value, and develop narrative to
summarize and convey findings to stakeholders.

Phase 6: Operationalize –
 The team communicates benefits of project more broadly and sets up pilot project to
deploy work in controlled way before broadening the work to full enterprise of users.
 This approach enables team to learn about performance and related constraints of the
model in production environment on small scale  , and make adjustments before full
deployment.
 The team delivers final reports, briefings, codes.
 Free or open source tools – Octave, WEKA, SQL, MADlib.

First of all, we need to install Pandas and there are several different environments where you
can run it. If you want to run it directly in your machine, you should take a look at Anaconda,
a distribution aimed at scientific computing that comes with hundreds of pre-installed
packages. Anaconda can be installed in Windows, macOS, and Linux.

However, there is an easier way to get started with Pandas through your browser, using a
Jupyter Notebook in the cloud. For instance, you could use IBM Watson Studio or Google
Colab. Both can be used for free and come with several Python packages pre-installed.

In this article, I am using Google Colab because it is really easy to use out of the box and
doesn’t require any previous setups.

Data analytics with Pandas tools:

Pandas is a high-level data manipulation tool developed by Wes McKinney. It is built on

the Numpy package and its key data structure is called the DataFrame. DataFrames allow you
to store and manipulate tabular data in rows of observations and columns of variables.

These 6 plotting tools will help you understand the data better:

 Scatter matrix plot

 Density plot
 Andrews curves
 Parallel coordinates
 Lag plots
 Autocorrelation plot

Basic skills to Become Data analyst with Pandas:

 Python programming.
 Intermediate mathematical understanding.
 Structured Query Language (SQL)
 Knowledge and experience of Pandas and time series.
 Ability to analyse and interpret data.
 Critical thinking skills.
 Strong communication.

The index represents a sequence of values. In the DataFrame, it always on the left side.

Values in an index are in bold font. Each individual value of the index is called a label.
Index is like positions while the labels are values at that particular index. Sometimes the
index is also referred to as row labels. In all the examples below, the labels and indexes are
the same and are just integers beginning from 0 up to n-1, where n is the number of rows in
the table.

Selecting rows is done using loc and iloc

 loc gets rows (or columns) with particular labels from the index.

Raises KeyError when the items are not found.
 iloc gets rows (or columns) at particular positions/index (so it only takes integers).
Raises IndexError if a requested indexer is out-of-bounds.

One of the first and most important roles of a Data Analyst is to determine the Organization’s
Goal. That involves working with:

 IT Teams
 Management

 Data Scientists

 Mining Data

Data mining is a process to structure the raw data and formulate or recognize the various
patterns in the data through the mathematical and computational algorithms. It helps to
generate new information and unlock the various insights. Data Analysts have to often mine
or collect data. Getting data from the company database or extracting it from external sources
to do any sort of research is one of the major roles of any Data Analyst.

 Data Cleaning

Data cleansing is the first step in the overall data preparation process and is the process of
analyzing, identifying and correcting messy, raw data. When analyzing organizational data to
make strategic decisions Data Analysts must start with a thorough data cleansing process.
The good analysis rests on clean data–it’s as simple as that. Cleaning involves removing data
that may distort your analysis or standardizing your data into a single format.

1. Economics
Economics is in constant demand for data analysis. Analyzing data to form patterns and
understanding trends about how the economy in various sectors is growing, is something
very essential for economists. Therefore, a lot of economists have started using Python and
Pandas to analyze huge datasets. Pandas provide a comprehensive set of tools, like
dataframes and file-handling. These tools help immensely in accessing and manipulating data
to get the desired results. Through these applications of Pandas, economists all around the
world have been able to make breakthroughs like never before.

2. Recommendation Systems
We all have used Spotify or Netflix and been appalled at the brilliant recommendations
provided by these sites. These systems are a miracle of Deep Learning. Such models for
providing recommendations is one of the most important applications of Pandas. Mostly,
these models are made in python and Pandas being the main libraries of python, used when
handling data in such models. We know that Pandas are best for managing huge amounts of
data. And the recommendation system is possible only by learning and handling huge masses
of data. Functions like groupBy and mapping help tremendously in making these systems
possible.

3. Stock Prediction
The stock market is extremely volatile. However, that doesn’t mean that it cannot be
predicted. With the help of Pandas and a few other libraries like NumPy and matplotlib, we
can easily make models which can predict how the stock markets turn out. This is possible
because there is a lot of previous data of stocks which tells us about how they behave. And
by learning these data of stocks, a model can easily predict the next move to be taken with
some accuracy. Not only this, but people can also automate buying and selling of stocks with
the help of such prediction models.

4. Neuroscience
Understanding the nervous system has always been in the minds of humankind because there
are a lot of potential mysteries about our bodies which we haven’t solved as of yet. Machine
learning has helped this field immensely with the help of the various applications of Pandas.
Again, the data manipulation capabilities of Pandas have played a major role in compiling a
huge amount of data which has helped neuroscientists in understanding trends that are
followed inside our bodies and the effect of various things on our entire nervous system.

5. Statistics
Pure maths itself has made much progress with the various applications of Pandas. Since
Statistic deals with a lot of data, a library like Pandas which deals with data handling has
helped in a lot of different ways. The functions of mean, median and mode are just very basic
ones which help in performing statistical calculations. There are a lot of other complex
functions associated with statistics and pandas plays a huge role in these so as to bring
perfect results.

6. Advertising
Advertising has taken a huge leap in the 21st Century. Nowadays advertising has become
very personalized which helps companies to get more and more customers. This again has
been possible only because of the likes of Machine Learning and Deep Learning. Models
going through customer data learn to understand what exactly the customer wants, providing
companies with great advertisement ideas. There are many applications of Pandas in this. The
customer data often rendered with the help of this library, and a lot of functions present in
Pandas also help.

7. Analytics
Analytics has become easier than ever with the use of Pandas. Whether it is website analytics
or analytics of some other platform, Pandas do it all, with its amazing data manipulation and
handling capabilities. The visualization capabilities of pandas play a big role too in this field.
It not only takes in data and displays it but also helps in applying a lot of functions over the
data.

8. Natural Language Processing

NLP or Natural Language processing has taken the world by a storm and it is creating a lot
of buzzes. The main concept is to decipher human language and several nuances related to it.
This is very difficult, but with the help of the various applications of Pandas and Scikit-learn,
it is easier to create an NLP model which we can be improved continuously with the help of
various other libraries and their functions.

9. Big Data
One of the applications of Pandas is that it can work with Big data too. Python has a good
connection with Hadoop and Spark, allowing Pandas to have access to Big Data. One can
easily write to Spark or Hadoop also with the help of Pandas.

10. Data Science

Pandas and Data science are almost synonymous. Most of the examples are a product of Data
Science itself. It is a very broad umbrella which encompasses anything that deals with
analyzing data, and thus almost all applications of Pandas fall under the scope of Data
science. Pandas mainly used for processing the data. Therefore Data Science on Python
without Pandas is very difficult.

Data Analytics with Pandas with Examples:

In simple terms, a data frame is like a table that contains named columns and rows of data
similar to a table in a database. A data frame is powerful and has a lot of built-in functions
that allow us to manipulate data. We are going to look at some of these functions. In the
example above, the wine dataset is read and stored in a data frame called data.

The head() function prints the first 5 rows in the dataset by default. If a number ‘n’ is
specified as an argument, it prints the first ‘n’ rows in the dataset.

The data.columns prints a list containing all the column names in the data.

The info() function provides useful information about the data such as the number of rows,
number of columns, name of each column, and its data type, etc.

In a data frame, we can access individual columns by using the dot(.) operator.

For instance, in the example above, we access the ‘quality’ column in the data and print the
minimum and maximum values. Similarly, we can also access the ‘pH’ column by typing
data.pH.

This is another way to access individual columns: data['quality']

We created two new columns, ‘good_wine’ and ‘bad_wine’ as shown in the example above.
The ‘good_wine’ column will have True wherever the ‘quality’ of the wine is greater than 5.
The ‘bad_wine’ will have True wherever the ‘quality’ is less than or equal to 5.

The sort_values() function sorts the data frame based on the specified column. In the
example above, we specify the ‘alcohol’ column, and the data is sorted based on this column.
ascending=False tells pandas to sort the data in descending order. This can be set to True if
you want the data to be sorted in ascending order.

data = data.drop(columns=['good_wine', 'bad_wine'])

can see in the image above, the ‘good_wine’ and ‘bad_wine’ columns have been removed.

Case Study of Data Analyst with Pandas:

So far, we have covered the extensive functionalities of pandas. We'll try to implement these
functionalities in some case studies. These case studies will give us an overview of the use of
each functionality and help us determine the pivotal points in handling a DataFrame.
Moreover, the step-by-step approach of the case studies helps us to deepen our understanding
of the pandas functions. This chapter is equipped with practical examples along with code
snippets to ensure that, by the end, you understand the pandas approach to solving the
DataFrame problems.

We will cover the following case studies:

 End-to-end exploratory data analysis

 Web scraping with Python
 Data validation
