Features
Centralized pressure check points
All hydraulic pressure checkpoints are grouped together
with quick connect fittings for quick and easy pressure
checking.

Central lubricating point


The central lubricating point on the right front side of the
superstructure supports many of the regular greasing points.

Slew ring, lower boom attachment including the boom


cylinder and grease points on the boom, are lubricated from
this grease point.

Bucket linkage points are lubricated individually.

Automatic downhill retardation


The hydraulic travel motor is a pressure-controlled variable
piston motor equipped with a hydraulic brake valve that
prevents cavitation and over-speeding on downhill grades.

This means less service brake usage, safer operation, and


piece of mind for the operator.

Good off-road mobility


The front axle can oscillate ± 9° ensuring good ground
contact and tractive force in off-road operations (if
equipped with mudguards, oscillation is reduced to ± 7°).

The front axle is automatically locked when the digging


brake is applied and low / creep speed is selected, ensuring
full stability even when digging diagonally over the front
axle.

During loading / unloading of a trailer, front axle oscillation


can be locked manually.

Features
High-capacity heating & ventilation system
The pressurized and filtered cab air is supplied via 13 vents
by the high capacity heating and air conditioning unit for
optimal heating, defrosting or cooling.

The air filter is dual type and easily replacable without using
tools. The Electronic Climate Control (ECC) delivers
constant, pre-set cab temperatures.

New instrument panel


The new instrument panel, combined with Machine Display
Unit (MDU), provides information on all vital machine
functions at a glance, as well as easy-to-read diagnostic items
in the event of system failure.

Ergonomic operator’s workstation

Switches for similar functions, such as illumination, travel,

The mode selection system


New rotary switches for mode selections facilitate

Parking mode (P) / Travel mode (T) / Working mode (W) /
Customer mode (C).

Each operating mode provides optimum control required


for the operation. Engine speed and selected mode are
displayed on the Machine Display Unit (MDU).

The new seat provides a better fit for operators of all sizes
and physiques.

Efficient air cleaning


The engine air cleaning system is crucial to the reliability
and life of the engine. In Volvo excavators, air cleaning is
performed in three stages; cyclone-type integral pre-cleaner,
primary filter and the secondary filter (or safety filter).
Tight sealing between filters and housing ensures no bypass
of dirt or debris.

No tools needed to open the service cover and the latches


are easy-fasten.

Central lubricating point


The central lubricating point on the right front side of the
superstructure supports many of the regular greasing points.

Slew ring, lower boom attachment including the boom


cylinder and grease points on the boom, are lubricated from
this grease point.

Bucket linkage points are lubricated individually.

Compact tail slew radius and low machine profile facilitates

Features
High-performance, low-emission Volvo engine
The new Volvo turbocharged air-to-air intercooled six
cylinder low emission engine meets EU step2 / EPA tier2
emission requirements.

The electronically controlled high pressure fuel injection


system provides quick response, lower fuel consumption
and faster work-cycles. High engine output also gives top
class performance.

All-round visibility
Forward visibility has been improved by slimmer yet
stronger cab pillars and thinner cross bar, resulting in a
significant reduction of blind spots on each side.

Main wiper is relocated to the top of the windshield for


enhanced visibility. Extra-long upper wiper blade (80 cm)
ensures perfect view. Lower wiper for better visibility
during ground work digging is available as option.

Adjustable steering wheel & operator comfort


The steering wheel can be adjusted longitudinally via a
button on the steering column base. While digging, the
steering wheel can be moved towards the window for more
operator space.

There is also a newly-designed cup holder and practical size


of lunchbox compartment for improved operator comfort.

Easy-to-service orientation
The engine is positioned lengthwise on the right side of the
superstructure. It provides very good accessibility for oil
level check, filter change and other service operations.

Most service jobs can be carried out from the ground.

Features
Durable and easy-to-clean radiator
The radiator is made of aluminium for superior heat
dissipation and greater strength. The radiator and the
charged air cooler are located side by side for easy access.
The optional dust net is easily removable.

Engine preheater
Engine induction air is automatically preheated allowing
smooth and reliable starting and minimized exhaust
emissions when starting in cold weather. A diesel coolant
heater or an electrical coolant heater (220 V / 110 V) are
available for applications in low temperature.

Load-sensing hydraulic system


The advanced load-sensing hydraulic system with variable
flow gives the operator excellent manoeuvrability, especially
in the combined movements, and better control over load
and attachment.

The hydraulic pump delivers exactly the flow and pressure


needed. Even at small lever movements, i.e. small hydraulic
flows, the load-sensing hydraulic system can deliver full
pressure without unnecessary engine power usage.

Low noise and durable hydraulic pumps


The advanced hydraulic pump design allows reduction of
noise and contributes to increased durability.

- Main pump: Special design of valve plate and port head of


the piston pump for reduced flow and pressure ripple. An
accumulator is installed as noise absorber.

- Gear pumps: Zero backlash gear teeth reduce the


amplitude of flow and pressure ripple (primary source of
noise).

Features
Hydraulic filters
The return filter’s increased dirt holding capacity elongates
replacement period up to 2,000 hours. Filter elements are
made of fibre glass with steel mesh reinforcements to
provide a stable filtering performance over a long period.

A filter clogging sensor is installed to facilitate maintenance.


Pilot and drain filters are installed for higher reliability of
hydraulic system.

High travel performance


The well-matched drivetrain and the high-performance,
low-emission engine provide constant high tractive forces
and travel speed.

Together with the Load-sensing hydraulic system there are


only minimum losses when travelling, slewing and moving
at the same time.

Hydraulic oil cooler


The oil cooler is made of aluminium for better durability
and higher heat discharge efficiency.

The hydrostatically driven fan motor is controlled


proportionally to the oil temperature, meaning less noise
and optimal cooling for the hydraulic system.

The oil cooler is situated separately from the radiator to


allow easy access for cleaning.

The AC condenser can be also moved from the oil cooler


for better access.

Integrated slew drive


EW160B-180B: The slew motor is integrated with the
control valve for saving space and giving more control. Slew
reduction is done by the single stage planetary gear, making
it "maintenance free". since lubrication is done by the
hydraulic oil.
EW140B: The long life and high torque radial piston motor
drives the pinion directly on the slew ring, thus reducing the
need for maintenance on the reduction gear.

application.

The excavators are very flexible, thanks to a wide range of


buckets and attachments available.

New electronic control system - Contronic


New Volvo machines are equipped with an advanced
electronic control system:
• Vehicle Electronic Control Unit (V-ECU)
• Instrument Electronic Control Unit (I-ECU)
• Engine Electronic Control Unit (E-ECU)
• Transmission Electronic Control Unit (T-ECU)

These units keep an eye on the machine functionality in real


time and provide optimal control leading to high
productivity and low fuel consumption.

Optional hydraulic circuits


Booms and dipper arms are provided with welded brackets
for extra hydraulic piping as standard. This feature will save
considerable time and money when installing optional
hydraulic kits later on.

The optional hydraulic lines can be equipped with shut off


cocks to avoid spillage.

Safe access to service points


Spacious service platforms with anti-slip steps behind the
cab provide a safe and easy access to the components at a
higher level.

Ergonomic details, like longitudinal mounting of the engine,


mean easy service and routine maintenance from ground
level.

Stable and ingenious undercarriage supports
All stabilizer devices can be operated independently, in
combination or all at the same time.

Wide outrigger spread enables the stable support during


heavy lifting or digging operation.

All cylinders and hydraulic valves are well protected by


heavy duty covers.

Strong boom and arms


Great efforts have been devoted to optimising boom and
arm design with respect to the digging geometry and
durability. They are designed to withstand all lifting, digging
and twisting forces during the toughest operating
conditions.

Well-protected distribution box


All fuses and relays are located together in the distribution
box and are clearly marked.

Each wire and connector is systematically marked to


facilitate troubleshooting in the electrical system.

There are pre-wired leads to several optional items for quick


retrofitting.

Side doors and hoods


All hood- and side door hinges have grease lubricating
points and gas spring struts for easy handling.

Doors and hoods including the tool boxes on the


undercarriage, cab door and fuel filler cap are opened with
one single key.

Features
Superstructure alignment system
When selecting “travel mode”, the position sensor under the
superstructure indicates if alignment to the undercarriage is
straight. As such, the operator is immediately alerted and
can easily adjust the superstructure to the right position.

Quick-fit
The hydraulic quick-fit allows change of attachments
quickly and easily without leaving the cab. It increases
productivity and machine flexibility. To change
attachments, 2 switches needs to be actuated
simultaneously, thus less risk of inadvertent bucket release.

Large tool box


A wide toolbox of 280 litres capacity is available on the left
hand side and / or on right hand side. The tool box has a
lockable storage compartment, and can be used to house the
optional tool kit.

Power shift transmission & propeller shaft


The power-shift gearbox allows switching between low and
high speed while moving. The downshift protection system
guarantees downshift at high travel speed only occurs within
the safety range. The gearbox allows 3 separate maximum
speeds depending on gear selected. Creep speed can be
adjusted down to 1 km/h (option). The propeller shaft is
lubricated for life.

Blue Agreement
The Blue Agreement is a specialist program of machine
inspection and servicing carried out by Volvo trained
technicians. Comprehensive, proactive reports and MATRIS
(Machine Tracking Information System) data provide the
information you need to maximize machine productivity
and enhance resale value. The machine’s software is
updated regularly with latest improvements. An option of
professional maintenance for attachments is available.

White Agreement
The White Agreement is a program of regular machine
inspections carried out by the experts – Volvo service
trained technicians. The inspections result in comprehensive
inspection reports to help with preventative maintenance,
support extended warranties and enhance the value of your
machine at resale. Furthermore, the White Agreement
offers regular proactive machine analysis to assist in ensuring
ongoing maximum productivity.

Silver Agreement
The Silver Agreement offers complete flexibility in the way
the agreement is put together – with the option to alter
details, including the budget, during the course of the
agreement. It also allows you to spread the cost of
inspections, maintenance and even major repairs to reduce
the impact on cash flow. A provision for including major
specialist repairs that might be beyond your site engineers,
such as driveline and engine.

Gold Agreement
The Gold Agreement is chosen to give a complete peace of
mind over the availability of your Volvo machine and
removes the need for any on-site engineering facility. Fixed
costs are guaranteed for the life of the agreement (excluding
site damage). An excellent machine history when it comes
to resale, with everything verified by Volvo engineers.

Attachment
Hammer
The booms and are equipped as standard with welded
brackets for extra hydraulic piping. This feature will save
the dealer or customer considerable time and money later,
when he wants to install an optional hydraulic kit.

Tilting bucket
For jobs such as ditch cleaning, grading, backfilling or
cutting sloped trenches, an optional slope/rotator hydraulic
kit will provide good match with tilting bucket.

adapters for all types of applications. The self-sharpening
design, high quality steel alloy and vertical loading device
