Examen Extra-Ordinario - Mecánica de Materiales II - A - 15122021 - ME221
1._Four forces are applied to the machine component ABDE, as shown in Figure E1. Knowing
that the cross section containing points H and J is a 20 x 40-mm rectangle, determine the normal
and shearing stresses at (a) point H, (b) point J.
2._The aluminum column shown in Figure E2 is fixed at A and hinged at B. Use the concept of
effective length to replace the fixed condition by a simple support. It is made of an I-section with
dimensions as marked. Calculate maximum stress and displacements for load eccentricities
marked in the figure.
3._The 30-mm-diameter solid steel shaft shown in Figure E3 is simply supported at its ends.
Three pulleys are keyed to the shaft where pulley C is of diameter 100 mm and pulley B and D
are of diameter 200 mm. the shaft lengths are given in millimeters. The forces on pulleys C and
D are in the z and negative y directions, respectively. The forces on pulley B are 45° from the
positive z direction. (a) Neglecting stress concentration, determine the locations and magnitudes
of the greatest tensile, compressive, and shear stresses in the shaft. (b) Determine the bending
deflections of point C on the shaft. Let E = 210 GPa.
4._In reference to the figure shown in Figure E4, the cross section shown in figure (a) is that for
the beam shown in figure (b). Let a = 2 in., h = 6 in., b = 4 in., p = 2 kips/ft, P = 40 kips, L = 16 ft,
and ϕ = 20°, determine the maximum tensile and maximum compressive bending stresses
specifying their locations.
5._Consider the beam shown in Figure E5. (a) Determine the reactions and draw the shear and
bending moment diagrams for the beam using the method of integration; (b) Indicate the
maximum shearing force and bending moment for the case when w = 200 lb/in., L = 240 in., and
P = 10,000 lb.
6._Consider the beam shown in Figure E6. (a) Determine the reactions and draw the shear and
bending moment diagrams for the beam. (b) Hence, or otherwise, obtain an expression for the
deflection y at any distance x from the left end of the beam by the double integration method.
