The Victorian Era is thought to have poor and wealth peoples and that’s it.

People were
differentiated with upper class, middle class and lower class (worker class). 1 And that’s why, the result
of this poverty was seen in the books of well-known writers and poets, such as Charles Dickens and
George Gissing…2 And in this article, one of the books which is dealing with Victorian Era’s policies
upon poor children, “Oliver Twist” of Charles Dickens will be discussed and will be commented.

People in upper class would not need to work generally since they had inherited properties and
sometimes since they were landowners etc.. These people would often take on people from lower class
so that they work on their factory, workshop or lands.3 These differences were deeply criticized by
some writers and Charles Dickens’ “Oliver Twist”. 4 The government made a new law called Poor Law
of 1834 to aid poor people in the country but it made the poor poorer and the rich richer. 5 To me, what
is needed for the people of Victorian England was the supervision of money flow and dimension and
its fair distribution as to the social needs, such as dresses, foods and drinks, health, the freedom of live,
travel and learning… Especially when we say learning, we see that the government was trying to do
some practises for encouragement to education of little children instead of going a factory or
workhouse to be able to live and aid his family, like giving medals to students who weren’t late for
school and for attendance completely.6

Our main character in the book, Oliver Twist, we see him to be born orphan and to be grown up by
orphanage personnel. The book narrates that just because Oliver wanted some more food from
personnel, he was served right to be jailed to basement by Lady Mann. If it is the result of Poor Law of
1834 and workhouses which were opened by the law, then somebody who hears that pathetic incidents
will exactly be impressed by the novel and criticize the happenings of time. Then, the Orphanage
Board decides to give Oliver to any worker as an apprentice and he was given to a mortician. This
explains us that the country’s situation of time was really pathetic that little workers were really
popular and there were no strict law against poor and little workers. That is such a thing people need to
give importance today and everyday that people’s revolt of time were sink into the books of well-
known writers and today we are trying to block same problems in our countries.

  If we are fond of our people and our country’s future, we need to take lessons from writers and their
works such as Charles Dickens… The Victorian Age’s system were exemplified in the article and
given information about the people’s social, economical situations and needs of poor and wealth
people. Oliver Twist is a great work of Dickens to be able to understand the situation of Victorian Era
and its painful scenes.
