Tea Haus by Kengo Kuma and Associates

• “Easy to dismantle and transport and can be used as a
small dwelling

Inuits built and rebuilt their igloo dwellings as they moved from
place to place. It was as if they were carrying the same home Today, igloos are still built on arctic hunting trips occasionally
with them. They did not literally because it was not practical – as
because they are such an efficient use of local material
snow would melt. But they were using the same material and
building the same structure, they just left out the part where they (extremely easy to find snow, just look down) and form (heat
physically carried/travelled with it. This Tea Haus is “easy to trapped in top of dome).
dismantle and transport” which embodies the essence of what
the Inuits were accomplishing.

• “Freestanding cave-like structure”
• “Designed to blend in perfectly with the elements and the
nature of the environment”
• “Air would circulate perfectly well inside the structure,
avoiding the need for air conditioning”

Just like the traditional igloo, this piece of architecture is a

“freestanding cave-like structure”. Similar to the igloo blending
into its snowy background, Hoto Fudo was intended to blend
nicely with its surrounding environment. Lastly, like the igloo
utilizes its form/shape to manipulate warmth and function without
a heater, this structure is configured specifically to eliminate the
need for an air conditioner by directing air flow.
