LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET
FESTIVAL DANCES (BASIC WARM-UP EXERCISES)

Background Information for Learners

Festival dances participants need energy, endurance, and stamina. It is important for them
to warm up before any dance activity to prepare the body for longer and global movements and
help to decrease tension in the muscles and joints. Through this preparation you can ensure you
are able to move without stress and strain during activity. A safe warm up gradually increases the
body temperature to an optimal working level and helps to avoid injuries. The cool down is just as
important after dancing as this can help to reduce muscle soreness and speed up the recovery
process after the activity.
You should never feel tired after warm up, it should always contain simple or low impact
movements with no fast changes of direction. The movements should be controlled, continuous
with the correct alignment to reduce the risk of injury. A warm up should include exercises for
neck, shoulder, elbows, wrists, hips, spine, knees and ankles with 6-8 repetitions of each exercise.
By the end of the warm up you should feel warm, relaxed and ready to start dancing.

Applying First Aid to Dance Injuries

Background Information for Learners

First aid is the help given to someone who has suffered an injury until full medical
treatment becomes available. Its objective is to lessen the severity of an injury and to save the life
from life-threatening emergencies. First aid kit is also essential that should be always available
and accessible. This contains at least cleansing soap, antihistamines, thermometer, scissors, safety
pins, cottons, swabs, gauge, band aids, tweezers, and ointment.
In case of serious injury, it is important to get immediate medical attention. However, for
minor injuries, following the RICE formula will help reduce the pain and speedy recovery.
RICE stands for:
Rest the affected body part. You may use sling for an arm injury or crunches for leg or
foot injury. Splint an injured finger or toe by taping it to an adjacent finger or
toe.
Ice the affected area to reduce swelling. Use a thin towel to apply ice.
Compress by using an elastic bandage.
Elevate the affected area to stop bleeding.
Causes of Dance Injuries
• Dancing involves a certain level of physical activity. Sometimes, dancers will repeat
movements and routines over the course of several hours. Because of this, they pose a
greater risk of having sustaining injuries such as stress fractures, among others.
• It is essential that dancers, across all ages, receive proper nutrition. Unhealthy eating habits
such as too much dieting may lead to injuries while dancing.
• Other cause includes inexperience, poor posture, fatigue, hazardous environment, etc.
Common Dance Injuries
• Hip injuries such as snapping syndrome and hip syndrome.
• Foot and ankle injuries such as Achilles tendonitis and trigger toe.
• Knee injuries and stress fractures in the lumbar spine.
• Cramps in the large muscle.
• Ankle sprain because of not warming, excessive twisting and stretching which may lead to
tearing.

Note: Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times. 18

To lessen the chances of injury, make sure you have proper food and water intake. Avoid
also being overfatigue and excessive training by getting enough rest. Engage in endurance and
strength building activities. Always wear proper attire and shoes. Do the warm-up activities
before training or performing any physical activity and always be aware of your body’s
condition and maintain healthy lifestyle.

Dance activities in the Community

Background Information for Learners

One way of contributing your knowledge and skills in the community is being aware of

activity you can participate in is festival dancing.
There are several benefits we gain in festival dancing. Dancing keeps you healthy and
improves your social skill. It develops your self-confidence in meeting new people within your
community. These activities promote cooperation among community members which foster the
sense of prosperity and harmony. Due to number of people drawn to take part in the activities it
promotes tourism and attain financial benefits in the community. This in turn encourages tourism
and develops the different organizations in a town or locality.
The community is responsible for preserving, enhancing, and developing all aspects of
their culture. As such, it is important to involve all its members in upholding these social
responsibilities and help the nation progress. Promoting active participation of the people in
community events such as festival dances must be encouraged to further develop our
