Sub: Plastic/carry bag Pollution in India

Dear Editor,

Plastic pollution is the accumulation of plastic products in the environment that adversely affects
wildlife, humans and the food chain. Plastics are inexpensive and durable, and as a result levels of plastic
production by humans are high.Plastic is an incredibly useful material now a days but it is also made from
toxic compounds, and because it is meant for durability, it is not biodegradable. So when you throw away
plastic, there is no "away."

15, 000 tonnes of plastic waste is generated every day in India. Landfill areas contain many different types of
plastics. Plastic can release harmful chemicals into the surrounding soil, which can then seep into
groundwater or other surrounding water sources and also the ecosystem. Burning of plastic in the open air,
leads to air pollution due to the release of poisonous chemicals. Through drainage system plastics are moved
to river and end up in the ocean, thereby causing harm in marine ecosystem and marine animal. Plankton,
fish, and ultimately the human race, through the food chain, ingest these highly toxic carcinogens and
chemicals which is called Biomagnification. Our economy relies so much on tourism and ecotourism, the
impacts of plastic pollution has been shown to have an adverse impact on this industry.

The Government has notified the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016, minimum thickness of plastic carry
bags has been increased so that cost of production will increased by about 20-25 %. Hence, the tendency to
provide free carry bags will come down. Without easy access to free bags, one quickly becomes accustomed to
their own reusable bags.
Some Local bodies also formed taskforce to combat the menace of carrybag pollution. Till now we are far
away from achieving the vision of Swacchh Bharat and cleanlines.

An eco-friendly product, which is a complete substitute of the plastic in all uses, has not been found till date.
In the absence of a suitable alternative, it is impractical and undesirable to impose a blanket ban on the use of
plastic all over the country. The real challenge is to improve Collection and plastic waste management
systems.

So I request for your kind interference into the matter which is required to be highlighted before the public
eye with your valuable suggestion or criticism.

Thanking you,

Yours sincerely
XYZ
