SENTENCE TYPES
WEEK 2/3
● Sentences made up paragraphs and by extension, essays
too.
● Well written sentences will help reader understand the
ideas and messages behind the essay.
● Sentences can be written to be simple or more complex,
depending on the simplicity or complexity of the ideas

ON ● The length of the sentence does not indicate its
complexity. A simple sentence can be written long too.
● When you are reading the sentences in the essay, pay
close attention to how the writer write the sentences. Do
you understand the ideas or messages being written? Does
the sentence confused you? Do you think the sentences
are clearly written?
● In any essay, you can see that the writer used all of the
sentence types below.
● Writers use simple sentences to express facts or opinions
strongly.
● Lack of natural resources is one of the results of large ecological
footprints.
● They use compound sentences to link related ideas such as
SENTENCE causes and effects.
TYPES ● Large ecological footprints cause many problems, and it is our
social responsibility to solve them.
● Complex sentences have one independent clause and at
least one dependent clause to explain connections between
ideas.
● Because resources are readily accessible in developed countries
like the United States, people in these countries tend to have
large ecological footprints.
