Determination of the Percentage Water of Crystallization in

a Hydrated Salt

Introduction: The aim of the experiment was to determine the mass

and percentage of the hydrated Copper Sulphate.
Preliminary Calculations:
-Mass of the Crucible: 55.59 g
-Mass of the hydrated Copper Sulphate: 3.00 g
-Combined Mass: 58.59 g
Apparatus and Materials: Crucible and Lid, Bunsen, Tripod, Gauze,
Pipeclay Triangle, Hydrated Copper Sulphate (CuSO4+XH2O),
Electronic Balance
Procedure:
1. Approximately 3.00 g of hydrated Copper Sulphate was
weighted in the Crucible.
2. The hydrated Copper Sulphate crystals were heated until they
have reached a white color.
3. The mass of the hydrated Copper Sulphur crystals was
weighted and recorded.
4. The Copper Sulphur crystals were heated a second time to see
if the constant mass was obtained.
5. The constant mass was not obtained, and the Copper Sulphur
crystals were heated for a third time,
6. The constant mass was obtained and recorded.
Results and Calculations:
-Constant Mass of Crucible and Copper Sulphur: 57.50 g
-Constant Mass of the CuSO4: 58.59-57.50= 1.91 g
-Constant Mass of water: 3-1.91= 1.09
-Percentage of water: 36.3%
