Solution.

1. A 110-N force and a 55-N force both act on an object point P. The 110-N force acts at 90°.
The 55-N force acts at 0°. What is the magnitude and direction of the resultant force? Draw
and add vectors for these two displacements.

X Y

110 N 90° 0 110

55 N 0° 55 0

Dtx = 0 + 55

Dtx = 55

Dty = 110+ 0

Dty = 110

2 2
R= 𝑎 + 𝑏

2 2
= (55) + (110)

= 3025 + 12100

= 15125

R = 122.98 N or 123 N

𝑜𝑝𝑝
θ = tan-1 𝑎𝑑𝑗

110
θ = tan-1
55

θ = tan-1 (2)
θ = 63.44° or 63°

2. You walk 30 m south and 30 m east. Draw and add vectors for these two displacements.
Compute the resultant.

Given:

30m South

30m East

Solution:

2 2
R= 𝑎 +𝑏

2 2
= (30) + (30)

= 900 + 900

= 1800

R = 42.43 N or 42 N

𝑜𝑝𝑝
θ = tan-1 𝑎𝑑𝑗

θ = tan-1 ( )
30
30

θ = tan-1 (1)

θ = 45°
