• Singular and Plural Nouns

Singular Noun

Singular Nouns are words with only one number, where a word refers to a single person, place, object
or idea. For example, ball, one, woman.

In general, singular nouns are always preceded by the article (article) a or an, before singular nouns
especially for objects can be counted and begin with a consonant. Included in a singular noun are all
nouns that do not undergo change or do not experience the addition of s or es. Examples of singular
nouns are:

He is a teacher (he is a teacher).

She doesn't own a car (she doesn't own a car).

I saw a bear at the zoo (I saw a bear at the zoo).

However, there are also articles (articles) that are used before a singular and countable noun that starts
with a vowel sound. The example is :

He is an actor (he is an actor).

She didn't get an invitation (she didn't get an invitation).

I saw an eagle at the zoo (I saw an eagle at the zoo).

Plural Noun
Unlike the singular noun, a plural noun is a noun that is used to indicate that there is more than one
object. Generally formed from a single noun by adding s / es to the noun. For example: balls, they,
women.

There are 6 rules to remember when spelling or forming plural nouns. Which, the rules are based on
the letter at the end of the word, among others:

For most singular nouns, add the "s" ending at the end of the noun. For example: monkey - monkeys,
pencil - pencils, girl - girls.

By adding the suffix "es" to singular nouns that end in s, x, z, sh, or ch. For example: gas - gases, box -
boxes, waltz - waltzes, brush - brushes, church - churches.

Changing the suffix "y" that starts with a consonant in a single noun to a suffix "i" and then adds "es".
For example: sky - skies, army - armies, boy - boys, alley - alleys.

For nouns ending in "f" or "fe" by adding "s" or nouns ending in "f" or "v" by adding "s" or "es". For
example: belief - beliefs, roof - roofs, loaf - loaves, life - lives, knife - knives.

For nouns ending with the letter "o" by adding "s" or "es". One trick to keep in mind when it comes to
sound is simply adding an "s". for example: cello - cellos, piano - pianos, radio - radios, potato -
potatoes, tomato - tomatoes.

There are several nouns that have an irregular plural form. For example: man - men, woman - women,
child - children, foot - feet, tooth - teeth.
