CHIEF ENGINEERS STANDING ORDERS

1. Never hesitate to call the Chief Engineer (always in ample time) whenever you have any doubt or when encountering unusual machinery problems (failure of
pumps, generators, compressors, steering gear, Inter Gas, etc.) which may impede the safe operation of the vessel.
3. Always Observe wearing Personal Protective Equipment before entering and carrying out work in the Engine Room, e.g. Boiler Suit, Safety shoes, goggles Ear
mufflers/plugs, Safety Helmets as required
4. Smoking strictly not permitted in the engine room except in designated areas.
7. Do not transfer any oils in the engine room without the Chief Engineers permission. When transferring oils, the precautions of the safety checklist “SOPM
(Tankers) Form 8.1, Bunkering / Oil Transfer Checklist” must be followed.
8. Always keep all doors, skylight, funnel door of Engine Room closed during cargo work.
10. Always ensure air-conditioning on internal circulation when at oil terminals and when berthed.
11. Ensure all garbage, oils, oily rags in the engine room disposed to refuse barge.
12. Ensure workshops, bilges, all engine room flooring, ladder steps, steering gear flat clean and oil free.
13. Do no carry out hot work, electrical work or enter enclosed space without my permission.
14. Ensure self-closing valves of sounding pipes or level gauges NOT LOCKED in open position.
15. Ensure note dangers when handling chemicals and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) posted for any chemicals (if carried) in the Engine room.
16. Ensure all valves, operating machinery, vents clearly marked. All safety signs posted and Safety Equipment and Life Saving Appliances ready for immediate use.
17. Ensure Engine Room rounds are taken hourly and Engine Room Log filled every 4 hourly.
18. Second Engineer shall maintain the records of all equipment in the Test Log
19. Morning meetings with engine staff, prior commencing work, shall be held by the Second Engineer. Work shall be carried out shall include safety precautions as
required and recorded in the Second Engineers Daily Work Book.
