PLANT AND ITS PARTS (continued)

LONG ANSWER TYPE : 18.2.22

Q1) Write the functions of a root. Give few examples.

Ans: The functions of a root are-
**Roots fix the plant firmly in the soil.
** They absorb water and minerals from the soil.
** They prevent soil erosion.
e.g. carrot, radish,turnip,beetroot etc.

Q2) What are the functions of a stem? Give some examples of underground
stems.
Ans: ** Stem gives support to the other parts of a plant and helps the plant to
stand upright.
** It carries water and minerals absorbed by roots to all parts of the
plant.
** It also carries food prepared by the leaves to all parts of the plant.
Potato, ginger, onion are some examples of underground stems.

Q3) What are the functions of a leaf? Give some examples of leaves which we
eat.
Ans: ** Leaves prepare food for the plant by the process called
photosynthesis.
** Releases oxygen gas during photosynthesis.
** Leaves have stomata which help the plants to breathe.
e.g. cabbage, lettuce, spinach etc.

Q4) What is photosynthesis?
Ans: The process by which the green leaves prepare food for the plant with
the help of sunlight, carbon dioxide, water and chlorophyll is called
photosynthesis.
For this reason, leaves are known as the kitchen of the plant or food factory of
the plant.
PHOTOSYNTHESIS --
Photo-->light (sunlight)
synthesis--> to make

carbon dioxide + water+sunlight+chlorophyll-----------> glucose (food)+oxygen

Q5) What is a tap root? Give some examples.

Ans: A tap root consists of one thick main root from which many thin and small
side roots grow. It grows deep into the soil.
e.g. peas, beans, turnip, carrot etc.

Q6) What are fibrous roots? Give some examples.

Ans: A fibrous root has a number of small roots almost of the same length and
size arising from the bottom of the stem. They do not go deep into the soil.
e.g. grass, wheat, onion, rice etc.
