Part 1 – General Kitchen Safety


Wear appropriate clothing
and footwear. Tie back
long hair.

Keep walkways clear.
Reduce all hazards.
KITCHEN SAFETY – HOT ITEMS

1. Use dry oven mitts or folded dish cloths to touch hot items.
2. Always place hot items on heat-resistant surfaces.
• OK: stovetop, stainless steel table, wire rack, pot holder
• NOT OK: bare counter, plastic surfaces
3. Be careful not to shock glass. Don’t move it from hot to cold
or cold to hot very quickly—it may shatter!
4. Open oven doors and lids away from your face.
KITCHEN SAFETY – FIRE
PREVENTION

1. Don’t lose track of your cooking/baking. Set timers and check


back often.
2. Keep workspace clear of flammable and unnecessary items.
3. Use the right equipment.
4. Keep sleeves rolled up.
5. Remember to turn off stove/oven.
KITCHEN SAFETY – IF THERE’S A
FIRE

Grease Fires: Oven or Microwave

MINOR BURNS AND CUTS

• Reduce all hazards! Remove from heat, turn off, clear areas,
etc. (bystanders, help out with this).
• Wash minor cuts under running water. Apply pressure to
stop the bleeding. Seek First Aid.
• Run minor burns under cool running water until pain goes
away. Seek First Aid.
• Always let the teacher know. For serious emergencies, they
will call the office (and 911 if necessary) for immediate help.
