3.0 OBJECTIVES OF SKIM AKREDITASI MAKMAL MALAYSIA (SAMM)

The reason of applying SAMM accreditation for Process-3 is mainly to satisfy MTR
requirement in maintaining PETRONAS MIS SWEC as attached below. Other than this, our lab
can operate even without the accreditation in place.

Therefore, looking into the requirement it will take CAPEX and OPEX investment in
order to establish the lab and running according to accreditation requirement. Having
competence personnel running the lab is the essence so that the initial objective is met and
the lab can offer services to the industry in long run.

The general objectives of SAMM are:-

1. to grant formal recognition to laboratories with proven capability and competence in

specific fields of testing/calibration.
2. to reduce and eliminate the need for multiple assessments on laboratories.
3. to upgrade the status and standard of testing and calibration laboratories in the country.
4. to promote the acceptance, both in Malaysia and overseas, of calibrations and tests
performed by SAMM accredited laboratories.
5. to enhance the quality, acceptability and reputation of Made-in-Malaysia goods in
domestic and overseas markets.

Importance Of Accreditation:

SAMM Accreditation signifies two things to you, the customer:

1. The laboratory has the ability and competence to do specific tests, measurements or
calibrations.
2. The laboratory undergoes regular independent assessments to help ensure it is providing
the best possible service to you.

7.1: pH

BRAND: Hanna Instruments

RANGE: 6.5 to 8.5 Ph
METHOD: Adaption of the Phenol Red Method. The reaction with the reagent causes a yellow
to red tint in the sample.
REAGENTS:
1. HI 93710-0 Phenol Red Indicator
ACESSORIES:
1. COD and Multiparameter Photometer
2. Cuvette 10 mL
PROCEDURE:
1. Turn on HI 83099 COD and Multiparameter Photometer and select the Method 37 for pH
2. Fill the cuvette with 10 mL of unreacted sample (up to the mark) and replace the cap.
3. Place the cuvette into the holder and close the lid.
4. Press the Zero key. The display will show “-0.0-” when the meter is zeroed and ready for
measurement.

Page | 9
5. Remove the cuvette and add 5 drops of HI 93710-0 Phenol Red Indicator. Replace the cap
and mix the solution.
6. Reinsert the cuvette into the instrument.
7. Press the Read key to start the reading. The instrument displays the pH value.

7.2 Chemical Oxygen Demand

BRAND: Hanna Instruments

RANGE:
1. 0 - 15,000 mg/L (High Range)
2. 0 - 1,500 mg/L (Medium Range)
3. 0 - 150 mg/L (Low Range)

METHOD: Adaption of the USEPA 410.4

REAGENTS:
1. HI 93754C-25 Reagent vial for High Range
2. HI 93754B-25 Reagent vial for Medium Range
3. HI 93754A-25 Reagent vial for Low Range
4. Deionized Water
ACESSORIES:
1. HI 839800 COD Reactor

3. HI 740216 Test tube cooling rack (25 holes)
4. HI 740217 Laboratory bench safety shield

PROCEDURE:
1. Choose a homogeneous sample. Samples containing settleable solids need to be
homogenized with a blender.
2. Preheat the COD Reactor HI 839800 to 150 °C (302°F). Use of the HI 740217 safety shield
is strongly recommended.
3. Remove the cap from two Reagent Vials.
4. Add exactly 0.2 mL of sample to one vial (sample vial), and 0.2 mL of deionized water to
the other vial (blank vial), while keeping the vials at a 45-degree angle.

RANGES REANGENT VIALS BLANK SAMPLE

High range HI 93754C-25 0.2 ml 0.2 ml
Medium range HI 93754B-25 2.0 ml 2.0 ml
Low range HI 93754A-25 2.0 ml 2.0 ml

5. Replace the cap tightly and mix by inverting each vial a couple of times and be careful
when handling because of the vials will become very hot during mixing.

Page | 10
6. Insert the vials into the reactor and heat them for 2 hours at 150°C.
7. At the end of the digestion period switch off the reactor. Wait for 20 minutes to allow
the vials to cool to about 120°C.
8. Invert each vial several times while still warm, then place them in the test tube rack. The
vials are still hot, be careful when handling them.
9. Leave the vials in the HI 740216 Test tube cooling rack to cool to room temperature. Do
not shake or invert them anymore otherwise the samples may become turbid.
10. Turn on HI 83099 COD and Multiparameter Photometer and select the Method 33 COD
HR.
11. Place the COD vial adapter in the cuvette holder and ensure that the adapter is well fit
inside.
12. Place the blank vial into the holder and push it completely down.
13. Press the Zero key and the instrument will perform a zero sequence. If the zero sequence
was successfully done, the display will show “-0.0-”. Now the meter is zeroed and ready
for measurement.
14. Remove the blank vial.
15. Place the sample vial into the holder and push it completely down. Press Read and the
instrument will perform the reading.
16. The instrument directly displays concentration in mg/L of oxygen demand.

INTERFERENCES
Interference may be caused by:
1. Chloride (Cl¯) above 20000 mg/L.
2. Samples with higher chloride concentration should be diluted.

7.3 Total Iron

BRAND: Hanna Instruments

RANGE: 0.00 -5.00 mg/L (High Range)
METHOD: Adaption of the EPA Phenantroline method 315B
