WHAT IS CAVITATION ?
WHAT IS CAVITATION?

It is the rapid formation and collapse of air bubbles in a liquid, due

to changes in pressure. Cavitation occurs mainly when the static
pressure becomes smaller than the liquid’s vapour pressure.
CAVITATION
HOW CAVITATION WORKS ?

Bubbles of water vapour form when the pressure at a certain

location decreases below the vapour pressure, the vapour reverts
back to liquid once the bubble has reached a location with a
pressure above the vapour pressure .
HOWHOW
DOESDOES
A BUBBLE COLLAPSE?
A BUBBLE COLLAPSE?

When the local pressure goes below the vapour pressure , water evaporates
and a cavitation bubble is formed . Bubble is transported from where it was
formed at low pressure to areas with high pressure. Bubble stops growing if
the local pressure exceeds the vapour pressure , vapour condenses starting
with the bubble swoll , it’s surface starts to breakdown at its weakest spot . a
micro- jet pierces into the remains of the bubbles . micro - jet continues to
flow into the liquid and can hit a wall.
CAVITATION DAMAGES
CAVITATION DAMAGES

Cavitation damage occurs when the cavitation bubbles drift into a higher
pressure region of the flow and collapse suddenly, leading to small but
powerful pressure waves (micro - jet)that damage nearby solid surfaces.
SUPERCAVITATION
SUPERCAVITATION

Super - cavitation is the use of cavitation effects to create a bubble of gas

inside a liquid large enough to encompass an object travelling through the
liquid, greatly reducing the skin friction drag on the object and enabling
achievement of very high speeds.
Applications:
torpedoes
propellers
BENEFITS BENEFITS

1. used in high power ultrasonics

2. used to homogenize. mix or breakdown particles
3. used to cavitating water purification devices
4. used for destruction of kidney stones via shock waves
