QUESTION 1 [20 MARKS]

Corrosion is a crucial problem that strongly affects the natural and industrial environments. It can
impair the quality of the environment, the efficiency of the industry and the durability of the
infrastructure assets. Figure 1 shows pipe piling for marine structures. Based on the knowledge of
the corrosion of steel in the marine environment, design the thermodynamic and kinetic
mechanism of steel piling by referring to the E-pH diagram of steel. Include the polarization
behaviour of the steel in the design and justify the potential difference when you have zinc anodes
attached to the piling.

QUESTION 2 [30 MARKS]

a) A 20 m2 carbon steel plate is accidentally contaminated by a small drop of tin approximately

2 mm2 of tin on its surface. The plate is immersed in seawater. Will this contamination result
to galvanic corrosion of the steel plate. Justify your answer and elaborate the galvanic
corrosion mechanism in a schematic diagram.

(10 Marks)
[CO1, PO1, C5]

b) You are asked to inspect and analyze the failure that occurred on the water tank. Based on
the given information, evaluate the weight loss (g/min) of the cylindrical tank.

Material of tank: Low alloy steel, 4320

Current density: 1.5 A/cm2, Faraday’s constant: 96,500 A.s/mol
Water level: 55 cm (high)
Tank dimension: 60 cm (high), 50 cm (diameter)
Atomic mass, M: 12.25 g/mol
(10 Marks)
[CO1, PO1, C5]

c) As a material and corrosion engineer, you are given a task to investigate the root cause of a
crack in a pipeline. Propose an effective root cause analysis (RCA) by utilizing an RCA tool,
and discuss what methods can be applied to mitigate such problems.
(10 Marks)
[CO2, PO2, C5]
