The learners’ differences and the type of interaction they bring surely affects the quality
of teaching learning. This activity is about observing and gathering data to find out how student
diversity affects learning.
To realize the Intended Learning Outcomes, work your way through these steps:
Step 1: Observe a class in different parts of a school day. (beginning of the day, class, time,
recess, etc.)
Step 2: Describe the characteristics of the learners in terms of age, gender, and social and
cultural diversity.
Step 3: Describe the interaction that transpires inside and outside the classroom.
Step 4: Interview your resources Teacher about the principles and practices that she uses in
dealing with diversity in the classroom.
Step 5: Analyze the impact of individual differences on learners’ interactions.
The Observation Form is provided for me to document my observation.

An Observation Guide for the Learners’ Characteristics

The students from Malabon National High School are mixed males and females but
categorized by their gender in terms of seating arrangement. Male students are seated from
the right and females are on the left. I think, their estimated age ranges from 15 to 16 years
old since they were in Grade 10, with the total of _____ students.
I observed, during the English class session, every students shows interest with the lesson as
they were attentive and quiet. They interact with their teacher by responding to their teacher's
questions as their teacher called their name. Particularly, the interaction is limited since few
students are participating and not everybody is raising their voice.
With the above mentioned, the students manifest cooperation with their subject teacher. They
answer their teacher's questions and respond to it once they were called. They lend their ears
and become so attentive. They even do the activities and performed it in front of everybody. I
think, with those small details can prove that they show cooperation inside the classroom. On
the other hand, there are particular students who had a greater confidence than others and
they shine among the students. Those students seated in front and in the middle shows
confidence when answering. They stood up once asked by their subject teacher and reasoned
out their answers. Besides, I don't see a student struggling to cope up, or have asked for help
because, maybe they understood the instructions really well. Moreover, I could tell, they all
participated as there were an activity given and all of them has performed. Personally, I dont
think they behave differently at those moments for there are people watching them. I think
they were all attentive and quiet as if they were really interested.
Experience and learning doesn't end inside the classroom but it extend to the outside world. Based
on my experience, students group theirselves outside the class are all based from particular
similarities like by their gender but mostly by their interests. As a student from all girls school, I
observed that girls gather together and group theirselves by their interests or likes such as hobbies,
sports or etc. Despite having those similarities, there were still some students who preferred to be
alone and seems to be branded introvert where in they find peace and energy being alone. They
usually reflect life and observe the things or people around them. Mostly, students like them are
quiet and hard to start a conversation with. On the other hand, those students who interact with
others find energy and peace with people or around people. They manifest great energy confidence
and friendly behavior.

With that said, I interviewed a teacher and ask their experience about learners in difficult
circumstances and the strategies she used to help those learners cope. This particular teacher said
that she had a student from highschool who is struggling from financial support and have been silent
and out during classes. He started to lose interest in class and have been worrying with his life and
school. In that case, the teacher spend her free time to talk to him privately and asked him reasons
behind those behavior. The student did not open up and just reasoned that it was just nothing. Until
then, the teacher discovered what he was going through from some of his friends and acquaintance.
Then the teacher found out that he was having hard time supporting himself. The teacher helped
him by giving him some job to support his studies rather stopping from going to school. Since the
teacher was able to provide the needs of her family, she extended the gifts and blessings she had
receive by helping other people. She and her family offered him job not so difficult for his gender like
working in their small restaurant suited for his masculinity. She also said, full encouragement and
cheer up is the only way to help students but as she was capable of helping his finances, she extend
it to him. Giving advise, the teacher also considered how students will react to her belief so what
she did is to share what she went through and how it affected her. She shared that when God works
for you, he'll really work. She also said that to be stronger is to hold on to God's promises. She said
those words with politeness due to different religious beliefs. I think, with the method she used is
efficient for that student has graduated from college.

OBSERVATION REPORT video 2

ANALYZE

1. Identify the person who play key roles in the relationship and interactions in the
classroom. What roles do they play? Is there somebody who appears to be the leader, a
mascot /joker, an attention seeker, a little teacher, a doubter/pessimist.
❎It was a teacher who play key roles in the relationship and interaction in the classroom.
She acted a real teacher inside the class. On the other hand, students played they roles as
learners and I don't see anyone from the learners acted like those mentioned.

What makes the learners assume these roles? What factors affect their behavior?

❎I think the factors that affect their behavior is due to the environment they were in.
Students are in the classroom and they played their roles as learners.

2. Is there anyone you observed who appear left out? Are students who appear: different?”
Why do they appear different? Are they accepted or rejected by the others? How is this
shown?
❎From the video presented in number 2, I think those students from the right side of
the teacher were left out since the attention of the teacher has been grabbed from
those who were in the left and in the middle. I also think that their participation made it
that way. Due to the attention given to those in the middle and on left because they
have been raising their hands, I think those students from the right find it hard to cope
up. It is not the idea of being rejected but the idea of not participating well unlike from
those in the middle.

3. How does the teacher influence the class interaction considering the individual
differences of the students?
❎The teacher relates the lesson into real life situation for her students to understand the
real meaning of it. She also keep asking questions to keep the class attentive and grab
their full attention.

4. What strategies does the teacher use to maximize the benefits of diversity in the
classroom? How does the teacher leverage diversity?
❎I think she keeps the communication or the interaction going by asking different
questions to her students. She relates real life situations that everyone could relate despite
of the diversity among the learners.

REFLECT

1. How did you feel being in that classroom? Did you feel a sense of nonsense of oneness or
unity among the learners and between the teacher and the learn?
❎Watching the video from Ranjuarya, I felt their unity to learn despite of diversity as the
learners are all focused and fully attentive to their teacher who is speaking or discussing.
They show and manifest an eager learners by fully lending their ears to their teacher
while listening and taking an effort to participate. They showed cooperation as they
respond to each questions and they behave really well. I realized, students are well aware
of of their roles and has been cooperating in the classroom to have a successful learning
experience. I also realized, inside the classroom we have particular roles to perform and
should be played really well to have an outcome that is worth of our time. I also learned,
as a teacher, we should always do our best to bring out the best from our learners despite
of our differences.
