多久 duōjiǔ – how long (time)

A: 你写了多久作业？Nǐ xiě le duōjiǔ zuòyè? (How long have you been

doing homework?)
B: 我写了一个小时作业。Wǒ xiě le yī gè xiǎoshí zuòyè.

walk while I make a phone call.)

2 他一边听音乐，一边写信。Tā yībiān tīng yīnyuè, yībiān xiě xìn.

(He listens to the music while he writes a letter.)

3 她一边唱歌，一边洗澡。Tā yībiān chàng gē, yībiān xǐzǎo. (She

sings songs while she takes a shower.)

4 这个孩子一边吃饼干，一边喝牛奶。Zhè gè háizǐ yībiān chī

bǐnggān, yībiān hē niúnǎi. (This kid eats cookies while he drinks milk.)
5 他一边跑步，一边听音乐。Tā yībiān pǎobù, yībiān tīng yīnyuè.
(He runs while he listens to music.)

6 我们一边聊天，一边喝茶。Wǒmén yībiān liáotiān, yībiān hē chá.

(We chat while we drink tea.)

7 我一边看电影，一边学汉语。Wǒ yībiān kàn diànyǐng, yībiān xué

hànyǔ. (I watch a movie while I learn Chinese.)

8 他一边上网，一边喝咖啡。Tā yībiān shàngwǎng, yībiān hē kāfēi.

(He surfs the Internet while he drinks coffee.)

9 你不能一边打电话，一边开车。Nǐ bù néng yībiān dǎ diànhuà,

yībiān kāichē. (You can’t make a phone call while you drive.)

10 我能一边看电影，一边写作业吗？Wǒ néng yībiān kàn

diànyǐng, yībiān xiě zuòyè má? (Can I watch TV while I do homework?)

11 这个孩子常常一边看电视，一边吃胡萝卜。Zhè gè háizǐ
chángcháng yībiān kàn diànshì, yībiān chī húluóbo. (This kid often watches
TV while he eats carrots.)

12 我常常一边看书，一边听音乐。Wǒ chángcháng yībiān kàn

Recall that there are three ways to use this structure:

 To emphasize when something was done: 我是昨天吃面条的。(It was

yesterday that I ate noodles.)
 To emphasize how something was done: 我是用勺子吃面条的。(It
was with a spoon that I ate noodles.)
 To emphasize where something was done: 我是在冰箱里边吃面条
的。(It was in the fridge that I ate noodles.)

already happened!

was at 3 o’clock that I booked the boat ticket.)

5 我是三点到酒店的。Wǒ shì sān diǎn dào jiǔdiàn de. (It was at 3

o’clock that I arrived at the hotel.)

6 我是昨天到中国的。Wǒ shì zuótiān dào Zhōngguó de. (It was

yesterday that I arrived in China.)

7 我是八点到饭馆的。Wǒ shì bā diǎn dào fànguǎn de. (It was 8

o’clock that I arrived at the restaurant.)

离 lí – from (in giving distances)

1 停车场离酒店很近。Tíngchēcháng lí jiǔdiàn hěn jìn. (The parking

lot is very close to the hotel.)

2 北京离上海很远。Běijīng lí Shànghǎi hěn yuan. (Beijing is very far

away from Shanghai.)

3 动物园离长城很近。Dòngwùyuán lí Chángchéng hěn jìn. (The zoo

is very close to the Great Wall.)

4 停车场离我的家不远。Tíngchēcháng lí wǒ de jiā bù yuan. (The

parking lot is not far away from my home.)
