New technology for communication

Multiple-choice vocabulary

Your boss has asked you to write an article about new technology for your company
website. You have nearly finished. Choose the correct word in each drop-down
menu to complete the text.

Hint

New communication technology

Communication technology changes at the blink of an eye. Take your eye off the

ball and suddenly your competitors can talk faster and more efficiently than you, and to

your customers. Keeping your business up to date with the best tools for the job can seem an

uphill struggle, whether it's a listed company or a smaller enterprise.

But buying the latest bit of kit as soon as it becomes available may not be the best policy,

according to e-business adviser Andy Poulton. 'Information and communication technology

always seems to be moving at breakneck speed, but in fact it's a mature industry,' he says.

'Broadband? It's just the same, only faster. It's like taking the motorway instead of a country

lane.'

But the changes now happening require a leap of perception akin to moving from

a Model T Ford to a Formula One car. It's the same basic technology, but the performance and

handling are very different. Although we know the internet uses telephony to put images on

the screen, we still think of handsets and keypads when it comes to talking to people.

A document can be emailed or faxed, but we still think of it as a piece of paper rather than a

series of digital dots . These are perceptions that need to be changed if businesses are

to take full advantage of technology. 'There's no split between types of data now,' says

Poulton. 'Voice, e-mail, paper - it's all the same thing.'

But for the small or medium-sized business, the real change is not what can be done, but the

price at which it can be done. New applications of existing technology mean cheaper

phone bills - which, given that communication can account for up to a third of a

company's IT budget, can make a healthy difference to the bottom line.

Summary

If businesses don't respond quickly to developments in communication technology, they

could lose customers . But it can be hard to keep up to date with these developments,

even for large, listed companies.

People think that communication technology is an industry that is always changing

completely, but in reality it is a mature one, and the only real change is that

communication has got faster . However, people's attitudes have not changed -

they still think that talking to people must involve handsets and keypads ,

and that a document must be something involving paper . For new technology to

be used to its full potential, people's perceptions have to change.

For some businesses, the main change concerns the price of the new

technology, which can have a significant effect on the funds a company allocates for

IT .
