The value lies in your audience, ultimately. I think this role
is critical as society shifts away from past sources and uses
technology as a source instead. And, most importantly, it does not
negate the human role. I think being a media and information literate
individual has enormous value if one becomes a resource and a
translator of current info into media or possesses a keen
understanding of the info in the media and is able to work with
others using or sharing info.
Aside from roles and responsibilities, being a media and
information literate can actually able to develop or broaden a
certain topic or idea from the information alongside internet. Being
a media and information literate requires certain skills such as
critical thinking. We must always know and take a look if the idea
that we are transmitting is actually informative or educational.
Instead of being the source of wrong information or being just a
toxic media user, let us use media and the internet in the most
appropriate and literate manner such as giving proper feedbacks,
comments and ideas in a particular topic and spreading new knowledge
and information that will be able to help and improve a certain idea
or anything that will help our world. Information and media literacy
enables people to interpret and make informed judgments as users of
information and media, as well as to become skillful creators and
producers of information and media messages in their own right.
Therefore, being a media and information literate is actually so much
helpful in our society and in this case, it will also help the
progress of each individual’s abilities and the progress of our
economic and social status. Social media has been part of economy
medium especially in business marketing that’s why media literacy is
really convenient.
As we study media and information literacy, let us grab and take
this opportunity to really access ourselves and be exposed in the
reality that media and information has a great factor that will
affect the improvement or status of a person, community and a
country’s development. This will train and help the progress of our
personality, conduct and also skills that we can apply in our daily
lives especially in our future. Let us be wise in every act, movement
and decisions that we are going to do not just online. Let us be
responsible enough so that we will be able to call ourselves as a
media and information literate.

 Yes. Because I know how to use media and through media I can
find any information upon searching it on the Internet via
reading on different sites and articles. That's why I considered
myself literate in media and information literacy. Yes, because
I have a knowledge and understanding on manipulating
computers/technology.
2. WHY IS BEING A MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERATE VERY IMPORTANT IN
THIS MODERN WORLD?
 Technology is evolving and changing rapidly. Technology is now
part our daily life. Its advancement is always parallel in
media. From accessing massive amounts of information on the
internet to simply experiencing an enriched personal lifestyle,
technology continues to benefit us day in, day out. Information
can be transmitted at any time and it is spreading rapidly.
Information can be delivered easily by the use of media and
internet. Technology has also made communication easier. Earlier
on, you had to send write a letter and so on. The recipient had
to wait for days and even months. Nowadays, people normally use
text messages and emails to pass important messages to
colleagues and relatives. If you want to take photographs, you
can take a digital camera and upload them directly to your PC.
Once you are done, you can attach a copy to an email and send it
off to the recipient. This way, you can actually share
experiences with friends and relatives. It is undoubtedly true
that technology is an important part of our daily lives. Life
has become more convenient and enjoyable. Our lives had become
easier than before.

THE VALUE OF BEING A MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERATE INDIVIDUAL
Nowadays, most people have computers, laptops, tablets and even
smartphones. These devices have made communication easier. Nowadays,
you can browse the internet from anywhere, anytime. These devices
have made life more enjoyable. There are many ways through which
technology has made life easier but being a media user, we must be
careful on using it. We must not just only take care of our gadgets
or devices because we must be aware and be careful on how we use
media and internet at the same time. Being a media and information
literate requires respect and self- control. We must be careful on
everything we say and post in social media. We must be responsible
enough on every act that we are doing. Many media or social media
users are actually illiterate and not responsible. Because of the
freedom and liberty that we have, we tend to forget the right conduct
and simple etiquettes that we must observe as a person.

DEFINE MEDIA AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IN YOUR OWN WORDS

Media and Information Literacy consists of the knowledge, the
attitudes, and the sum of the skills needed to know when and what
information is needed; where and how to obtain that information; how
to evaluate it critically and organize it once it is found; and how
to use it in an ethical way. The concept extends beyond communication
and information technologies to encompass learning, critical
thinking, and interpretative skills across and beyond professional
and educational boundaries. Media and Information Literacy includes
all types of information resources: oral, print, and digital. Media
and Information Literacy is a basic human right in an increasingly
digital, interdependent, and global world, and promotes greater
social inclusion. It can bridge the gap between the information rich
and the information poor. Media and Information Literacy empowers and
endows individuals with knowledge of the functions of the media and
information systems and the conditions under which these functions
are performed.
We live in a world where the quality of information we receive
largely determines our choices and ensuing actions, including our
capacity to enjoy fundamental freedoms and the ability for self-
determination and development. Driven by technological improvements
in telecommunications, there is also a proliferation of media and
other information providers through which vast amounts of information
and knowledge are accessed and shared by citizens. Adding to and
emanating from this phenomenon is the challenge to assess the
relevance and the reliability of the information.
3. How did Facebook affect the quality and quantity of information
available to people? Is it a good thing or a bad thing?
 There is a thin line between Facebook being bad and Facebook
being good. However, I believe that Facebook is a good thing
when it comes to the quantity and quality of information to
people. It is just in the manner of verifying an information and
a person’s level of knowledge about a particular issue when the
image of Facebook changes.
 Facebook, in comparison with Twitter’s 140 characters, have
enough characters that can help a person to vent out his or her
feelings, thoughts, insights, perception, or opinion about
something that needs to be addressed. Moreover, posting a
picture, video, link, note, or even a ‘feeling’ can help a
Facebook post’s quality higher since there are accompanying
medium of information for the words that have been used by the
user. On this regard, Facebook has the capacity to uphold a
good-quality and read-worthy-content posts. Again, it just
depends on how people are supposed to research or verify the
content and make himself or herself more acquainted with the
subject.

3. How can we achieve an effective communication with other people?
 Be aware of what your body is saying. Body language can say so
much more than a mouthful of words. An open stance with arms
relaxed at your sides tells anyone around you that you are
approachable and open to hearing what they have to say. Use
gestures. These include gestures with your hands and face. Make
your whole body talk. Use smaller gestures for individuals and
small groups. The gestures should get larger as the group that
one is addressing increases in size. Show your interest in
what’s being said. Nod occasionally, smile at the person, and
make sure your posture is open and inviting. Encourage the
speaker to continue with small verbal comments like “yes” or “uh
huh. Manifest constructive attitudes and beliefs. The attitudes
you bring to communication will have a huge impact on the way
you compose yourself and interact with others. Choose to be
honest, patient, optimistic, sincere, respectful, and accepting
of others. Be sensitive to other people's feelings, and believe
in others' competence Develop effective listening skills. Not
only should one be able to speak effectively; one must listen to
the other person's words and engage in communication on what the
other person is speaking about. Active listening provides a lot
more information about how to listen effectively and can help
you to avoid misunderstandings.
Formative Assessment: Recitation
1. How do you use Facebook as a tool or medium for communication?
 I used Facebook as a tool for communication wherein I send
messages through it. I used it to communicate with my family who
are in far places to know their conditions. I also use Facebook
to collaborate with my classmates if there are any
misconceptions about our school assignments, tasks, and projects
and of course to share my knowledge and ideas about something.
That’s why Facebook has an essential role in our life in terms
of communication nowadays. It’s one of the social networking
sites that is widely used by most people in the world.
2. How did Facebook affect or change the way we communicate with
other people?
 Facebook changed the way we communicate with other people in a
huge way. These make everything easy and fast to the point that
we always makes our messages shorter. The level of intimacy
becomes lower. Shorter but sometimes has a deep meaning. In the
past, people tend to send messages to people who are far from
them using letters and they will receive in not so short period
of time but today Facebook really makes our work much easier
since in just a matter of second the message you want to send
will receive by the receiver immediately.
Formative Assessment: Recitation
1. Why is communication a process?
 The Communication is a two-way process wherein the message in
the form of ideas, thoughts, feelings, opinions is transmitted
between two or more persons with the intent of creating a shared
understanding. The communication is a dynamic process that
begins with the conceptualizing of ideas by the sender who then
transmits the message through a channel to the receiver, who in
turn gives the feedback in the form of some message or signal
within the given time frame. A message or communication is sent
by the sender through a communication channel to a receiver, or
to multiple receivers. The sender must encode the message or the
information being conveyed into a form that is appropriate to
the communication channel, and the receiver then decodes the
message to understand its meaning and significance.
2. What are the important elements of communication?
 Important elements of communication includes:
 Sender: The sender or the communicator is the person who
initiates the conversation and has conceptualized the idea that
he intends to convey it to others.
 Encoding: The sender begins with the encoding process wherein he
uses certain words or non-verbal methods such as symbols, signs,
and body gestures to translate the information into a message.
 Message: Once the encoding is finished, the sender gets the
message that he intends to convey. The message can be written,
oral, symbolic, or non-verbal such as body gestures or any other
signal that triggers the response of a receiver.
 Communication Channel: The Sender chooses the medium through
which he wants to convey his message to the recipient. It must
be selected carefully in order to make the message effective and
correctly interpreted by the recipient.
 Receiver: The receiver is the person for whom the message is
intended or targeted. He tries to comprehend it in the best
possible manner such that the communication objective is
attained.
 Decoding: Here, the receiver interprets the sender’s message and
tries to understand it in the best possible manner. An effective
communication occurs only if the receiver understands the
message same as it was intended by the sender.
 Feedback: The Feedback is the final step of the process that
ensures the receiver has received the message and interpreted it
correctly as it was intended by the sender.
 The Noise shows the barriers in communications. There are
chances when the message sent by the sender is not received by
the recipient.

social activity. This social activity is pursued verbally

 Spoken or Verbal Communication. It includes face-to-face,
telephone, radio or television and other media. Non-Verbal
Communication. It is covering body language, gestures, how we
dress or act, where we stand, and even our scent. There are many
subtle ways that we communicate (perhaps even unintentionally)
with others. For example, the tone of voice can give clues to
mood or emotional state, whilst hand signals or gestures can add
to a spoken message.
 Written Communication. It includes letters, e-mails, social
media, books, magazines, the Internet and other media. Until
recent times, a relatively small number of writers and publisher
were very powerful when it came to communicating the written
word. Today, we can all write and publish our ideas online,
which has led to an explosion of information and communication
possibilities.
 Visualizations. These are the graphs and charts, maps, logos and
other visualizations can all communicate messages.
