Drug Use, Misuse, and Abuse

Addiction Rehab Toronto is a residential drug & alcohol rehab located in a

quiet and peaceful residential neighbourhood in North Toronto. Our facility is a

welcoming, relaxing and safe space for you or your loved one to receive the

treatment they need for their drug addiction, alcohol addiction, and associated

behavioural issues.

They work to facilitate the rehabilitation of our clients that suffer from

substance abuse/dependency using proven traditional methods in conjunction with

a holistic approach. We are committed to instilling life skills and core values

required to safely transition our clients back to their family, professional lives and

provide them with the necessary tools for sustained healing.

Their programs include addiction psychiatry, psychotherapy, one-on-one

counselling, addiction eduction, SMART recovery, anger management relapse

prevention, cognitive behaviour therapy and much more.

Alfred is a 23 year-old male who is in the Autism Spectrum Disorder. He is

also a senior college student who have had addiction issues with alcohol

consumption. In addition, he also uses marijuana with his college friends. He often

does when he goes to parties, when he feels anxious and exhausted or having

insomnia. Since the parents of Alfred was alarmed of the behaviour that has been

happening, they consulted for more professional help in addition to his therapy for

his autism. With this, they placed him in rehabilitation centre.

It is important that Alfred is supported and consider the following feelings/

conditions that is currently happening to him.

1. Denial (Denial related to personal vulnerability and difficulty in handling new

situations as evidenced by not perceiving personal relevance of symptoms or

danger

Interventions:

- Discuss current life situation and impact of substance use as this the first

step in decreasing use of denial is for patient to see the relationship between

substance use and personal problems.

- Remain nonjudgmental. Be alert to changes in behavior, (restlessness,

increased tension) as confrontation can lead to increased agitation, which may

compromise safety of patient and staff.

- Provide positive feedback for expressing awareness of denial in self and

others to enhance self-esteem and to reinforce insight into behaviour.

2. Imbalanced nutrition less than body requirements related to insufficient dietary

intake to meet metabolic needs for psychological reasons as evidenced by lack of

interest in food and weight loss (Low BMI)

Interventions:

- Note total daily calorie intake; maintain a diary of intake, as well as times

and patterns of eating as this information will help identify nutritional needs and

deficiencies.

- Provide opportunity to choose foods and snacks to meet dietary plan to

deficiencies, and helps evaluate patient’s understanding of dietary teaching.

- Recommend monitoring weight weekly as this provides information

regarding effectiveness of dietary plan.

3. Situational Low Self-Esteem related to negative role models and situational

crisis as evidenced by expressions of shame/guilt and rejecting positive feedback

about self

Interventions:

- Provide opportunity for and encourage verbalization and discussion of

individual situation as they have often has difficulty expressing self, even more

difficulty accepting the degree of importance substance has assumed in life and its

relationship to present situation.

- Provide reinforcement for positive actions and encourage patient to accept

this input as failure and lack of self-esteem have been problems for this patient,

who needs to learn to accept self as an individual with positive attributes.

- Encourage expression of feelings of guilt, shame, and anger because

expression of these feelings helps the patient begin to accept responsibility for self

and take steps to make changes.

Finally, among other interventions, it is important to educate about effects of

drugs used (and alcohol consumption) so that the information will help him

understand the possible long-term effects of drug and alcohol consumption.
