2. Do we really need observations from ships now that we have weather satellites? Why?

To use and further strengthen the reliability of the information and data obtained from
prognostic and synoptic chart, onboard weather observation should be done. Closer and
relevant observations and information can easily be taken onboard so why not make use of
it.

3. Interpret the weather map below. Label the symbols and explain what they mean.

The most noticeable symbol in this map is the low pressure that means there is a developing storm,
heavy weather shall be expected. the isobars are expressed in kiloPascals. It should be kept in mind
that the spacing between the isobars indicates the wind speed in the area, the greater the spaces,
the greater the wind speed the spacing also indicated the difference in pressure between them.
Then the pressure changes at a higher rate over distance as two isobars are closer together.

A long blue line with a filled color triangles is called a cold front. it indicates the area where cold
air pushes the warm air. Within this area it should be expected that there is a high chance for sudden
fall in temperature and heavy rain with thunderstorm. On the other hand, the long red lines with
filled color red semi circle indicates warm front wherein rain is most likely to occur since warm air
pushes the cold air hence resulting to rainfall.

The violet lline with alternating semi circle and triangle is called Occluded front. this indicates that
within this area, warm air is in between two cold air masses.
Whilst stationary is that curve line having alternate color and shape on its both sides It appears
neither of the warm air and cold air is strong enough to push each other. We can expect cloudy
weather along with stationary front.

PART 2. EXTEND

Search the weather today in your area. Illustrate a simple synoptic chat using the symbols you’ve learned
in this course. Explain each weather variable.
