Horizontal Circular
Motion
Centripetal Acceleration

● It is the component of acceleration

which is responsible for changing
Direction of velocity.
● It acts towards center of circle.
The net force towards centre which provides
centripetal acceleration is called as
centripetal force
Uniform circular Motion

It is the Circular motion with constant speed.

Centripetal Force

● Fc = mac = mω2r = mv2/r

● It provides centripetal acceleration

ac = ω2r = v2/r.
Centripetal Force

● Fc changes direction but not speed.

Centripetal Force
Tangential Acceleration

● It is the component of acceleration which is

responsible for changing Magnitude of velocity.
● It acts along the tangent
ar = r𝛼 = r
Non-Uniform circular Motion

Circular motion with variable speed is

known as non-uniform circular motion.
Net force acting along the
tangent which provides tangential
acceleration is called tangential
force
Tangential Force

● Tangential force Ft changes speed but not

direction.
● It causes tangential acceleration Mat = M r

In horizontal circular
motion Gravity does not
play a major role.

Solution:
T2 = mrw2
= (3) (2 + 1)(2)2
= 36 N
T1 – T2 = mrw2
3
T1 – 36 = (2) (1) (2)2
T1 – 36 = 8 2
T1 = 44N

Need for Banking

For unbanked circular roads, speed limit is

decided by coefficient of friction as vmax=
To increase the safe speed limit, we
bank the turning roads.
