INSTRUCTION: Solve the following word problems.

1. The probabilities of a machine manufacturing 0,1,2,3,4, or 5 defective parts in one day are 0.75, 0.17, 0.04,
0.025, 0.01, and 0.005, respectively. Find the variance and standard deviation of the probability distribution.
Interpret the result.

X Probability P(X) μ σ2 √ σ2
0 0.75 0(0.75)=0 0.114075 √ σ 2 = √ 0.6879
1 0.17 1(0.17)=0.17 0.063257 = 0.83
2 0.04 2(0.04)=0.08 0.103684
3 0.025 3(0.025)=0.075 0.1703025
4 0.01 4(0.01)=0.04 0.130321
5 0.005 5(0.005)=0.025 0.1062605
μ =0.39 σ2 = 0.6879

Interpretation: Therefore, the variance of the probability distribution is equal to 06879 while the
standard deviation is 0.83

2. The number of computers sold per day at a local computer store, along with its corresponding probabilities,
is shown in the table. Find the variance and standard deviation of the distribution. Interpret the result.

Number of Probability P(X) μ σ2 √ σ2

Computers
Sold X
0 0.1 0(0.1)=0 0.484 √ σ 2 = √ 1.56
1 0.2 1(0.2)=0.2 0.288 =1.25
2 0.3 2(0.3)=0.6 0.012
3 0.2 3(0.2)=0.6 0.128
4 0.2 4(0.2)=0.8 0.648
μ =2.2 σ2 = 1.56

Interpretation:

3. The number of inquiries received per day by the Office of Admissions in a certain university is shown below.
Find the variance and standard deviation. Interpret the result.

Number of Inquiries X Probability μ σ2 √σ2

P(X)
22 0.08 1.76 (4.7961)(0.08)=0.383688 =1.21
23 0.19 4.37 (1.4164)(0.19)=0.269059
24 0.36 8.64 (0.0361)(0.36)=0.012996
25 0.25 6.25 (0.6561)(0.25)=0.164025
26 0.07 1.82 (3.2761)(0.07)=0.229327
27 0.05 1.35 (7.8961)(0.05)=0.394805
μ =24.19 σ2 =1.4539
