Mean of Discrete Probability Distribution
 If X is a discrete random variable with values with
probabilities , respectively, then the mean or expected
value of X denoted by is:
F
O
R
M
U
L
A

 In a random variable, mean is the average value of all outcomes. It is also the
center of a random variable’s probability distribution.

Variance of Discrete Probability Distribution

 A variance is a measure of how much the probability mass is spread out around
this center. It is denoted by .
F
O
R
M
∑[ ]
U
L [ ] ②
A

 A standard deviation is the positive square root of variance. It is denoted by

.

Examples:
Solve the following problems. Find the mean, variance and standard deviation.
1. Find the expected number of times a baby wakes his/her mother after
midnight, given the following probability distribution:
X 1 2 3 4 5
P(X) 0.12 0.25 0.45 0.10 0.08

2. Find the expected mean of the random variable Z representing the

number of male teacher per senior high school
Z 3 4 5 6 7
P(Z) 40% 32% 11% 9% 8%

3. Find the expected number of monthly absences of Jemar based on his

previous records of absences as presented in the probability distribution
below:
X 0 1 2 3
P(X) 25% 30% 30% 15%

b. ANALYSIS
Solve the following problems. Find the mean, variance and standard deviation.
1. The probabilities that a customer will buy 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 items in a grocery
store are , respectively. What is the average number of
items that a customer will buy?
2. The probabilities that a surgeon operates on 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 patients in any
day are 0.15, 0.10, 0.20, 0.25, and 0.30, respectively. Find the average
number of patients that a surgeon operates on a day.

c. ABSTRACTION
1. What is mean and variance?
2. How to solve problems involving mean and variance?
3. How to get the standard deviation?

d. ASSESSMENT #3
Solve the following problems. Show your complete solution. Round off your
answer to the nearest hundredths.
1. If a number is drawn from a jar containing numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. What
is the expected value/mean, variance and standard deviation.

2. Find the standard deviation of the random variable Y representing the

number of m&m’s chocolates per 160-gram pack that has the following
probability distribution.
Y 6 7 8 9
P(Y) 0.10 037 0.33 0.20
