ES 622. Assignment 2
1. [20 points] Consider a 1D bar of cross-sectional dimensions 10 × 10mm and length 3m fixed
at left end and subjected to a uniform axial body force of 2 kN/m and a tip force of 20 kN. The
bar is made of steel (E = 200 GPa). Model the bar in ANSYS and compute the deflection profile
using 1, 50 and 100 elements. Plot displacement of the bar as a function of x for all three case.
Also plot the exact solution on the same axes.
3. [20 points] Consider a cantilever beam of cross-sectional dimensions 10 × 20mm and length
6m fixed at left end and subjected to a uniformly distributed downwards load of 10 kN/m a tip
load of 20 kN. The bar is made of steel (E = 200 GPa). Model the beam in ANSYS and compute
the deflection profile using 1, 50 and 100 elements. Plot displacement of the beam as a function
of x for all three case. Also plot the exact solution on the same axes.
4. [20 points] Consider a simply supported beam of cross-sectional dimensions 10×15mm and
length 6m fixed at left end and subjected to a uniformly distributed downwards load of 8 kN/m
a central load of 100 kN. The bar is made of steel (E = 200 GPa). Model the beam in ANSYS
and compute the deflection profile using 1, 50 and 100 elements. Plot displacement of the beam
as a function of x for all three case. Also plot the exact solution on the same axes.
4. [40 points] Model the truss system (as shown in fig. 1) in ANSYS and determine the nodal
deflections, reaction forces, and stress for the truss system shown below (E = 200GPa, A =
3250mm2).
