2 Introduction
This manual is only related to how the RDI 08-001SJ must be installed in the outer cabinet supplied
with the product.

The RDI 08-001SJ may be included to an existing IEC 61612-1/2 talker bus without having to use
an array of terminal blocks as junction points.

System overview

The RDI 08-001SJ is designed for being included into an existing installation. It is important that
the RDI 08-001SJ does not interfere with the existing equipment. In order to achieve this, the
installation must comply with IEC61162-1 and IEC61162-2.

The three most important issues are:

 The talker (transmitter) must not be overloaded.
 Ground loops must not be introduced.
 A power loss on the RDI 08-001SJ must not affect the other listeners.

2.1 Load on talker

The RDI 08-001SJ uses high impedance (~100KΩ) active receivers. Since the receiver impedance
is insignificant compared to the bus impedance the load on the talker is also insignificant.

2.2 Avoidance of ground loops

The guide lines for the installation found in section 3 must be followed.

2.3 Behavior following power down

The “input” and “output” connectors on the RDI 08-001SJ are physical connected using PCB traces
i.e. the bus and the remaining equipment will not be affected if the RDI 08-001SJ is switched off
(the input impedance of the receivers will remain high ~100KΩ).

Four rules must be observed:

 Cable shields must not be connected to ground at the RDI 08-001SJ.

 Cable shield for different talkers (or groups of talkers using the same cable) must not be
connected to each other.
 Cable shield from a talker to the remaining listeners must not be interrupted.
 The outer cabinet for the RDI 08-001SJ must be connected to a designated grounding point
on the vessel.

4 Test of existing equipment after installation of RDI 08-001SJ

The RDI 08-001SJ will not affect exiting equipment if installed properly. However rules for test of
existing equipment may exist if the RDI 08-001SJ utilizes the same signals as the existing
equipment.

4.1 Requirements for test of existing VDR

For VDRs installed from 1st July 2014:
An OPT must be carried out, ref IEC 61996-1 ed. 2.0 section 4.3.6.

VDRs installed before 1st July 2014:

A verification of the recorded data according the VDR’s operation and maintenance manual, ref
IEC 61996-1 ed. 1 section 5.5.2d.

For S-VDRs:
A verification of the recorded data according the VDR’s operation and maintenance manual. ref
IEC 61996-2 section 5.5.2d.
