Session 1: (Title) RULES TO FOLLOW!
Duration of Session: 1.5 hours
Target Audience Grade 5 Learners
Session Goal This session guide is offered to Grade 5 pupils to
facilitate lesson comprehension and focus on solving routine
and non – routine problems involving factors, multiples and
divisibility rules for 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12.
Key Understandings to be developed Display understanding on the factors, multiples and
divisibility rules of a number.

Learning Objectives At the end of the session, the participants are expected
to:
- Recall the rules on divisibility of a given numbers
- Use the factors and multiples of a number in
solving the problem
- Apply the steps in solving problems

___2___minutes Introductory Activity Opening the session: Comment [1]: I guess it is better if the
maximum number of minutes is already
• Give short greetings. indicated in each part. Lesser number
• Introduce oneself to the learners and give of minutes may be allotted for
preliminaries and even in the wrap-up
orientation of what is expected from the section
participants.
• Present the objectives of the session so
participants will be directed.
• Instruct the learners to be attentive so they can
answer the questions at the end of the session.

17 minutes Problem no.1
Delfin is willing to give a reward to whoever guesses
his age this year. His clues state that his age is
divisible by 12 and is a multiple of 9, and that he is
less than 51 years old. How old is Delfin?

In answering this question we need the steps in

solving a problem.
(ppt slide no.12-17)
1. Understand
What is asked in the problem?
● The age of Delfin this
year
What are the given facts?
● Age is divisible by 12
● Age is multiple of 9
● Age is less than 51
ENHANCED MATHEMATICS TEACHING AND LEARNING PROGRAM (EMTAP) SESSION GUIDE
2. Plan
What strategy is used to solve the problem?
Since there are just a few numbers less than
51 which are divisible by 12 and multiples 9,
we will use the Listing Method and
Elimination.
3. Solve
Listing Method
Numbers divisible by 12 and multiples of 9
that is less than 51
12- 24,36,48 x x
9- 9,18,27,36,45 x
36 – is the number less than 51 which is
divisible by 12 and multiples of 9.
Therefore, the age of Delfin this year is 36.
4. Check
We check if the answer satisfies the clues
given by Delfin.
● 36 is divisible by12
● 36 is multiple of 9
● 36 is less than 51
Since the clues given by Delfin are met, then we
conclude that the answer is correct.

Problem no.2
Mr. Joe needs to have blocks of wood that are 6
inches long each. He found logs of wood in their
backyard that have the following lengths in inches:
44,54 and 63. Which of these three logs is his best
option to get an equally-sized block of woods
without any excess.

Do the same steps.

ANSWER KEY:
Analysis:
1. 1. Myla’s age now is greater than 40 but less than 50. Her age is divisible by 2,4,6,8 and 12.
How old is Myla now?
a. What is asked in the problem? Age of Myla now
b. What facts are given?
Greater than 40 but less than 50
Divisible by 2,4,6,8 and 12
c. How will you solve the problem?
Numbers greater than 40 but less than 50 are
41,42,43,44,45,46,47,48,49
= which of these numbers are divisible by 2,4,6,8 and 12
41 42 43 44 45 46 47 48 49

48= is the divisible by 2,4,6,8 and 12

d. What is the answer to the problem?

Myla’s age now is 48

2. Tony took the 50-item test in Mathematics. He got a passing score which is less than 40 but
greater than 35. His score is divisible by 2 but not divisible by 4 and 6. What is his score?
a. What is asked in the problem?
Score of Tony in Mathematics test
b. What facts are given?
50- item test
Less than 40 but greater than 35
Divisible by 2 but not divisible by 4 and 6
c. How will you solve the problem?
Listing method

36 37 38 39
2 / x / X
4 / X X x
6 / X X x

Tony’s score is divisible by 2 but not divisible by 4 and 6

doing the Math activity. What are the different ways that Mr. Martin can split up the class?
a. What is asked in the problem?
the different ways that Mr. Martin can split up the class
b. What facts are given?
40 pupils
different ways can split up the class
c. How will you solve the problem?
Find the factors of 40
40= 2 x 20
40= 4 x 10
40= 5 x 8

d. What is the answer to the problem?

MEMBERS 20 10 8 5 4 2

There are 6 different ways in which Mr. Martin can split up the class.

Math Challenge:
Ramer bought 430 pieces of notebook to be donated to an orphanage. He wanted to give each orphan 9
pieces of notebook. How many orphans would be receiving exactly 9 pieces of notebook? If there were
48 orphans, how many more pieces of notebooks should Ramer buy?
a. What is asked in the problem? Pieces of notebooks should Ramer buy
b. What are the given facts?
430 pieces of notebooks
9 pieces of notebooks each
48 orphans
c. How will you solve the problem?
48 x 9= 432

432-430= 2
Ramer needs 432 pieces of notebooks to have the 48 orphans receive 9 pieces of notebooks
each. He has 430 pieces of notebooks only, so he needs to buy 2 more notebooks.
d. What is the answer to the problem?
Ramer will need to buy 2 more notebooks so that the 48 orphans will receive 9 notebooks
equally.
