Session 1: (Title) Order of Operation

LET’S GET SIMPLE!

Duration of Session: 1.5 hours

Platform: Google meet

Target Audience Grade 5 Learners

Session Goal At the end of the session, the learners are expected to
follow a series of more than two operations on whole
numbers applying Parenthesis, Multiplication,
Division, Addition, Subtraction (PMDAS) or Grouping,
Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction
(GMDAS) correctly

Key Understandings to be developed The main purpose of this session is to develop

understanding the order of evaluating more than
two operations involving whole numbers

Learning Objectives ● To apply the rules in performing the series of more

than two operations of the whole numbers using
PMDAS or GMDAS correctly.
● To simplify the series of operations on whole
numbers involving two or more
mathematical operations using PMDAS or
GMDAS.
● To enumerate different rules in performing the series
of more than two operations of the whole numbers
using PMDAS or GMDAS

5 minutes Introductory Activity Opening the session:

Set the session by short greetings and orientation of

what is expected from the participants.
State the focus/overview so that the participants will
be properly directed. (SLIDE 5)

Set the session rules for the virtual

learning. (SLIDE NO. 6)
Are you ready to learn?

30 minutes Learning Activity Introduce the activity to the participants by

Priming: Motivation
⮚ Today we will discuss on how to solve a
mathematical operations with a series of operations.

⮚ Sometimes we see some

Facebook post like this,
and posted different
answers. Why?
(SLIDE NO. 7)

⮚ Ask: Are rules important to us?

(SLIDE NO. 8)
⮚ It is very important to follow rules.
⮚ We have to follow certain rules in order to solve
some mathematical expressions. These rules are
made by Mathematicians in order to get a unified
answers.
(SLIDE NO. 9)

Ask: (SLIDE NO. 10)

Why do we need to study order of operations?
What does the acronym PMDAS mean?
GMDAS?

How to solve a series of operations?

Presentation: (SLIDES NO. 11-13)

SET UP! Study the Scenario
Problem: Simplify the following arithmetic
expressions 3 + 4 x 2

Soluti
on:

Matt Maddie

3+4x23+4x2

=7x2=3+8

= 14 = 11

It seems that each pupil interpreted the

problem differently, resulting in two different
answers. Matt performed the operation of addition
first, then multiplication; whereas Maddie performed
multiplication first, then addition.
When performing operations there can be
only one correct answer. We need a set of rules in
order to avoid this kind of confusion.

FOCUS! (SLIDES NO. 14-17)

Study the rules in the order of operations.

LET’S GET SIMPLE! (SLIDE NO. 19)

Let’s look at some examples of simplifying
expressions using these rules.

1. 12 ÷ 6 × 2 + 4 – 5
2. 6 ÷ 3 × 2 + 5 – 1
3. 3 ×[4 - 2 × (10 -8) + 12 ÷ 6 × 1]

⮚ How will you simplify expressions using the order

of operations?

(To perform the order of operations, follow the

rules listed above.)

Solutions: (SLIDES NO. 20-22)

Ask: (SLIDE NO. 23)

1. What rules did you follow in Example 1? What
symbols are used in grouping expressions?
Which expression inside the bracket should be
simplified first?
2. State the rules for the order of operation when
Parenthesis, Multiplication, Division,
Addition, and Subtraction (PMDAS)/GMDAS
are involved.
3. What should you remember in
simplifying mathematical expression?

35 minutes Analysis WE CAN SIMPLIFY! (SLIDES NO. 24)

Simplify the given expressions. Discuss your

solutions with the group.

Performing Activities:
Ask: (SLIDES NO. 25)
How did you find the activity you have done?
How did you come up with the correct
answers? State the rules that you followed.
What problems have you encountered in simplifying
the expressions?

HELP ME, PLEASE! (SLIDES NO. 26)
Esang was absent for a week because she
was sick. When she went back to school, she
had to take a test. Please help Esang simplify
the
given expressions below.

6+7x8
(25 -11) x 3

(19-7) x (4+8) + 8
36 ÷ 2 + 4 x (4-2)

10 minutes Abstraction/ Ask: (SLIDES NO. 27)

Generaliza tion
How did you come up with the correct answers?

State the rules for the order of operation when

PMDAS or GMDAS are involved.

10 minutes Closing the Session Reflection:

What is the most challenging or least interesting

from the activities?

Enrichment:

I CAN DO IT! (SLIDES NO. 28)

A. Simplify the expressions below. Show your
answers and solutions on a whole sheet of paper.
1. 32 ÷ 2 × 2
2. 6 ÷ 2 +1 × 4
3. (15 – 6) + (4 – 1) × 23
B. Evaluate each of the expressions if:
1. A = 5
