LESSON 5
NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF CIGARETTE SMOKING

Smoking cigarettes may have effects in our

body. Some of these may lead into life threatening complications. Other organs
aside from our lungs can also be affected. Children and elderly may harm
themselves if they
were exposed to a second hand smoke. Our government provides programs to
fight these diseases and to warn others about its negative effects.

In this module, you should be

able to list down the negative
effects of cigarette smoking to one’s health;
explain how the cigarette smoking affects the
proper functioning of the respiratory system;
suggest proper practices that may have good
effects to one’s lifestyle; and design brochure that
shows healthy lifestyle and its effect to oneself.
Multiple Choice: Write the letter of the correct answer on the space provided.

______ 2. What is the disease when the harmful chemicals of cigarette damaged the
bronchial tube and alveoli?

A. diabetes B. blood cancer

C. tuberculosis D. lung cancer

_____3. The cause of clogging of excessive mucus in bronchial tube.

Did you find the test difficulty? You may check your
answers at last page of this module. It’s ok if you got
low score, it just means that you will be learning a lot
from this lesson.

Now, let’s have a puzzle about your lesson today. Follow the directions below.

Directions: Supply the missing letters below the puzzle. The

4 pictures are the clues to find the correct word/s.

You are a great puzzle solver! Now, let’s relate the lesson in your
everyday life. Try to answer the question below.

What do you think of someone who smokes

cigarettes?

Are you familiar with the

content of cigarettes?
What do you think will happen to a person who
frequently smokes cigarettes?

Is there a family member

Have you accidentally inhaled a who smokes cigarette?
cigarette’s smoke? How did you feel? How often do they smoke?

Do you know a disease that

can be acquired due to
Do you know any treatment given to a
cigarette smoking?
person who suffered from a disease due to
smoking?

Next, let’s study the disease that can be acquired through cigarette smoking.

Directions: Read the comic below and answer the

guide questions.
Whenever we smoke
cigarettes, we inhale a mix of
about 4000 harmful chemicals.
`` These chemicals cause swelling
of bronchial tubes present in
our lungs,

thus resulting in excess

Swelling production of mucus.

Also, they damage hair-like

projections called cilia whose
function is to push out the
excess mucus.

As a result, the bronchial tubes

get clogged.
This leads to persistent
coughing as our body attempts
to clear the mucus, thus
eventually causing chronic
bronchitis.
Secondly, these chemicals also
damage tiny air sacs called
alveoli present in our lungs.
This reduces the amount of
oxygen entering our blood,
thus causing a condition called
emphysema.

Note that chronic bronchitis and

emphysema are collectively called
chronic obstructive pulmonary
disease or COPD. COPD is
irreversible and incurable.

Lastly, some of these

chemicals can also damage the
DNA present in the cells of
bronchial tubes and alveoli,
thus leading to lung cancer.

Your lung supposed to inhale

oxygen in exchange to carbon
dioxide from our lungs to our
blood, but when oxygen was
replaced into harmful
chemicals, it will also
transport harm to our blood
and to the entire body

The previous activity shows how the proper functioning
of the respiratory system is affected by cigarette
smoking, this next activity will show you how it affects
the entire body.

You finished it! Good Job! That activity shows how smoking
can cause to life threatening diseases. And also, poor healthy
lifestyle may trigger some complications in our body. What
can you do to prevent these diseases? You can give your
suggestions on the next activity.
Directions: Write down your suggestions on how to have a healthy lifestyle.

Excellent! Let us now summarize the ideas that you gather on your activities.
The function of the respiratory system is to exchange the inhale
oxygen to carbon dioxide, the bloodstream delivers oxygen to red blood
cells, the deoxygenated blood carries carbon dioxide back to the lungs to release through
exhalation. If oxygen were replaced by harmful chemicals due to cigarette smoking, it may
travel through our bloodstreams and infect organs in our body. If a person continues a
habit of smoking, it can lead to life threatening complications to his body such as tooth
decay, heart disease, hearing loss, osteoporosis, discoloration of fingers and cancer.

Also, poor lifestyle habits can trigger some complications in our body
similar to the effects of cigarette smoking. To prevent these diseases to occur, you may
change your habits such as sleeping early at night, drinking plenty of water, having
balance diet, exercise regularly and avoid drinking too much alcohol.

Be ready to answers the questions below, make sure you have completed the activities
and you have already studied the lessons well. Your teacher might record your scores.

The next test is your performance task, you have to make a
project about this lesson. Make sure to prepare the materials
needed and follow the directions correctly, you will be graded
according to the rubric stated on the next page.

PERFORMANCE TASK

BROCHURE OF LIFESTYLE HABITS AND ITS’ EFFECT TO ONE’S HEALTH

Directions: Design a brochure that compares the good and bad lifestyle and its’
effect to one’s health. A picture below shows a sample of brochure. You may design it
depending on your own creativity. Its content must be related to the title above. You must
suggest your own ways on how to have a healthy lifestyle and its’ effects to oneself. You
may draw pictures, cut out from a magazines or printed pictures from the internet. Use the
