Read the passage given below, and answer the questions based on your understanding of the passage. (Question
Nos. 46-50)
With the realization across the world that the global economy is going to be increasingly knowledge-based,
science and technology have become the subject of discussion not just in classical ministries but also in
ministries as diverse as commerce, industry and finance, and in case of United States, even in the State
Department. In India, the Prime Minister has made frequent statements about the need to step up scientific
research in the country.
Several large companies, including multinationals are outsourcing R & D programmes to India.
This is partly because scientists are cheaper in India dollar for dollar, but also because India has a large pool of
trained scientists. Industry data shows that R & D is now the third-largest segment in India’s export of
Information Technology (IT) services. Foreign companies have invested over $ 1 billion in research operations
in India from 1998 to 2003 and another estimated $ 5 billion are in the pipeline. The United States is the biggest
investor followed by Germany, France, Denmark and UK. Japan and China have also begun to invest in
research programmes in India. Most foreign investment is being directed to research in computer sciences,
pharmaceuticals, molecular chemistry, drug discovery, engineering and automotive design and biotechnology,
including plant breeding. Whereas, flow of foreign investments has enthused research institutions that are
targeted for collaboration, there is also cause for concern. Although, India now attracts considerable foreign
investment in R & D, it has no system in place for assessing how this investment is affecting the country’s
technological development. Nor is there any mechanism to monitor the impact of such investment on aspects
such as skill development, sectoral capacity building etc. Do such foreign – funded research programmes
benefit only the scientists and technicians in the form of better salaries and perks or do they also produce
benefits for the country as a whole ?

Computing is in nature a problemdriven science and therefore PBL approaches have been applied to teach
various subjects. Kay et al. (2000) describe PBL in foundation courses in computer science. The course is
driven by specific problems related to programming skills and the instructors have set specific criteria to
measure the success of their approach atthe end of each problem. Having applied the approach for three years
the authors of the study conclude that the PBL approach promoted the collaboration among students and their
problem solving bilities.
A problem-based approach is used in a software development project (O’Kelly and Gibson, 2006). The authors
claim that, with this approach, students are provided with the freedom to think for themselves, activate their
prior knowledge and acquire new knowledge in an explorative and creative way. Another study supports that
lecture based approaches are not stimulating and the computer skills learnt are not transferable to other
situations (Lai, 2005). The author applied PBL in teaching pre-school teachers popular computer applications
such as Microsoft Office. Based on their evaluation of the activities, the author concludes that the course was
motivational and also promotes higher order thinking skills. Ellis et al. (1998) refer to the full problem-based
learning and the guided problem-based learning approaches. In full problem-based learning, the nature of the
problem guides and drives the entire learning experience. There are no formal expositions of knowledge from
the “expert”, and the students develop resources based on requirements they determine. In guided problem-
based learning, students have a problem to solve as a group.

Read the passage given below and answer the questions based on your understanding
of the passage (Question Nos. 46 – 50) : As the global information landscape increasingly facilitate the sharing,
repurposing and dissemination of information, the ways in which students are accustomed to interacting with
information resources are also changing. For some new students to universities, their understanding of
referencing is based solely on fear (McGowan, 2005) and many are familiar wit the basic concept of plagiarism.
Some students bring with them the academic process that served them well at school – however, these are not
suitable at Universities (Chanock, 2008). Students understand they should not copy words without referencing,
but fail to grasp the reasons why; the reasons are not explicit and often cloaked in unfamiliar and impenetrable
academic language. Pak’s (2003) review of literature proved as a handy summation of the investigations,
research, and thinking about plagiarism prior to the implementation of various plagiarism detection software
products. There are three main schools of thought in referencing and plagiarism discourse. A punitive approach
which focuses on the idea that students often deliberately engage in plagiarism and that the appropriate response
is one of punishment (Blum, 2009; Sutherland – Smith, 2010; Bilic – Zulle, et. al. 2008). A Restorative Justice
approach, however, suggests that plagiarism is in fact an act against a community (in this case, a community of
students), and that steps need to be taken to restore a level of balance (Wenzel; et. al. 2010; Karp and Conrad,
2005; Karp, 2009; Dickson, etc. al. 2009). An educational approach thatespouses that the best method of
reducing plagiarism is to educate and support students. Marking criteria and assessment tasks should be linked
to building referencing skills (especially in the first year) and ensure that the students learn these skills in a
discipline related context (Jaschik; 2008). The approach of both the University of Southern Queensland (USQ)
and Swinburne University of Technology is clearly aligned with the third school of thought. Students lack
proper understanding of the purposes of referencing. For them, referencing and citing is linked to just words,
not ideas (Jackson, 2006), so referencing is regarded as separate to the writing process, instead of an integral
part. To help students develop good writing and referencing practices, it is useful if universities help them
understand the research culture of tertiary study. Faculties need to make their referencing rules explicit and
lectures should provide useful exemplars within courses.

Read the passage given below and answer the questions based on your understanding of the passage (Questions
No. 46-50).
The vital role played by information and communication technologies in the development of
digital environment revolutionized the way libraries handle information for centuries. The ICTs
offer increased efficiency in terms of time, human resources and cost; improved quality of
information, greater flexibility and responsiveness, increased access and sharing, enhanced degree
of user interaction to specific information, review and modify the needs as per the situation. More
specifically the Internet takes firm roots in information storage, processing and dissemination and
provides global access. The users prefer the ease of use, portability, affordability and access to a
wide range of subjects on the net over the rule bound library environment. However, on the other
hand, electronic environment is not rosy, as it appears to be. The major issue is content organization.
The information is poorly structured on the web while libraries have successful methods for
information processing and retrieval. The content mapping, semantic web and ontology are under
experimental stages for the purpose of effective organization and retrieval of web resources. Hence,
users are apparently in need of librarians to assist them to access pertinent and precise information.
Therefore it is high time for library professionals to remodel themselves and act as aggregators, and
know-ledge managers through web based services tailor-made to the user information requirements.
In this context, Six Sigma applications have an immense value.
Service is the ability of an organisation to constantly and consistently exceed the customer’s
expectations. Improving customer service in libraries involves making a commitment to assess
users’ needs and developing action plans that implement user friendly processes. LICs are
implementing the same through user studies or surveys to ascertain the level of user satisfaction,
seek their opinions and suggestions and improve their service base based on the findings. However,
they are not documenting the policies, processes, procedures and important tools of these
programmes. Further, they don’t have a mechanism to identify the latent and dormant users and
their needs. This shows that there is a necessity to apply proved management techniques like Six
Sigma to analyse the current service programmes and to suggest for their improvement. It is a fact
that there is vast difference between the desired and perceived information needs of library users.
The traditional metrics have limitations and hence adoption of Six Sigma is useful as it measures
quality capability.

Read the passage given below and answer the questions based on your understanding of the passage
(Question Nos. 46 – 50) :
One of the major features of the World Wide Web is the capability to create links between pages. These links
are often viewed as analogues of citations in scientific publications (e.g. ROUSSEAU, 1997; BJORNEBORN
& INGWERSEN, 2001; CRONIN, 2001). Links can lead to a different site or may lead to a page in the same
site. Links for which the source and the target of the page are within the same site or domain are called self-
links. Instead of counting self-links, we count self-sitations - the number of pages on the site having a link or
links pointing to the same site. The difference between self-links and self-sitations is that for self-sitations a
page with several self-links is counted with multiplicity one. The reason for counting self-sitations instead of
self-links is technical: commercial search engines report the number of pages with self-links and not the
number of self-links. The term-sitation has been coined by ROUSSEAU (1997). In this paper we develop the
measures self-linking and self-linked, which correspond to the classical measures for journals : self-citing and
self-cited. We calculate these rates for a number of academic institutions on the Web. Self-links seems to be
more problematic than self-citations (of authors in scientific publications), because self-links are often inserted
for navigational purposes.
46. Self-links denote :
1) Links between two websites.
2) Links between two authors.
3) Links between source and the target of the page within the same site or domain.
4) Links between two articles written by two different authors.

Nos. 46-50)
Sonification and visualization by sound, has been studied widely for decades and it has also been applied in
software for blind people. The aim is to display, for example, graphics, line graphs or even pictures using non -
speech sound. By altering the various attributes of sound, for example pitch, volume and waveform, the sound
is changed according to its visual counterpart. In the Sound-View application a colored surface could be
explored with a pointing device. The idea was that the characteristics of colors, hue, saturation and brightness
were mapped into sounds. In 10 years, over 400 audio games have been developed, which is very small as
compared to video games. Researchers could have an important role to play in that expansion process, by
contributing to develop innovative features like a more pleasant audio rendering, by projecting audio games in a
futuristic point of view by using uncommon technology like GPS for instance and by participate in the
elaboration of games which can interest both visually and visually impaired community. Current audio games
can be studied with three dependency factors (1) dependency on verbal information, (2) dependency on
interaction mechanisms based on timing and (3) dependency on the interaction mechanisms of exploration.
Action games directly refer to games coming from and inspired by arcade games and require a good dexterity of
the player. One example of such games is “Tampokme” is such an accessible audio game.
48. Which of the following is not a dependency factor for studying audio games ?

Read the passage given below and answer the questions based on your understanding of
the passage. (Question Nos. 46 – 50)
The idea and phrase “serious leisure’ comes from Stebbins’ interviewees, who used the word “serious” to
underline the extent of their passion for a favourite leisure activity. In this case, the term embodies positive
qualities such as importance and sincerity, rather than negative traits such as gravity or anxiety. Whereas casual
leisure supplies pleasure, and project-base leisure delivers a temporary reward, serious leisure generates deep
and enduring sensations of fulfilment.
There are six defining characteristics to all serious leisure. First, there is the occasional need to persevere, as
when mountain climbers push through exhaustion to reach a peak. Second, is that of finding a leisure career in
the activity, with turning points and a sense of advancement. Third, serious leisure takes significant personal
effort based on specially acquired knowledge, training, experience, or skill. In this quality, serious
leisure is the opposite of its casual counterpart, which requires no expertise. Fourth, there are eight durable
benefits or outcomes to serious leisure: self-actualization, selfenrichment, self-expression, regeneration or
renewal of self, feelings of accomplishment, enhancement of self-image, social interaction and elongingness,
and lasting physical products of the activity. Fifth, serious leisure participants tend to identify strongly with
their chosen pursuits, and may be quick to assert their affiliation. Sixth, a unique ethos, or
spirit of the community, exists around each serious leisure activity.
There are three main types of serious leisure : amateurism, volunteering, and hobbies. Amateurs operate in t he
fields of art, science, sport, and entertainment.
