Cold Water Plumbing Design Guides

DCW Water Tank Design

1. Determine the type of building.

2. Choose the water demand from SYABAS guideline. (Refer to the Attachment-A)

3. Determine the days of storage:-

a. Putrajaya use 2 days.

b. Other Area, 1 day.

c. 1.5 days to be allow for building more than 6 floors height & water
demand>220,000 iGal.

4. Determine the floor height of the building.

5. Determine the free board for the RC tank and FRP tank to determine the nominal &
effective capacity. (Refer to Attachment-B)

6. Ensure that the effective capacity of tank is greater than the min. water demand
calculated.

7. Provide sump pit in the pump room for tank maintenance. Check sump pit level with
the external drainage level to determine the needs of sump pump.

DCW Transfer Pump Design

1. To transfer water from suction tank to roof tank.

2. Determine the height of the building.

3. Calculate the pump head, in m-head or ft-head through

a. Quick sizing method – Multiply 110% of the height of building

b. Friction loss method – Refer to Attachment-C

4. Determine the effective roof storage tank capacity, divide by 8 hours for commercial
and 12 hours for residential, to obtain the pump capacity in iGPM or m3/hr.

5. After determined the pump capacity & pump head, pump motor kW can be
obtained through formula/catalogue.
DCW Variable Speed Pump Design

1. To serve top 3 floors.

2. Determine all the loading units for top 3 floors. (Refer to Attachment-D)

3. Check the flow rate based on the loading units on the chart. (Refer to Attachment-E)

4. Determine the flow rate in iGPM or m3/hr.

5. Determine the furthest point of the fittings, at the top most floor.

6. Determine the outlet pressure for the fitting selected. (Refer to Attachment-F)

7. Put in the pipe size for 3 sections shown below (Refer to Attachment-D):-

i) Pipe from pump to the dropper

ii) Pipe from dropper to sub-meter

iii) Pipe from sub-meter to furthest fittings

8. Check the chart and determine the head loss in m-head.

9. The total head(m-head) of the variable speed pump should be

= Head loss + Outlet Pressure – Gravity Gain

Piping Materials

1. Recommended piping materials by SYABAS.

2. According to JPSB standard,

a. Pumping main – MSCL pipe c/w flanged connection

b. Pressurized pipe – Polysteel pipe

c. Distribution pipe – ABS PN12/ UPVC Class E

d. Incoming pipe – DI pipe

e. Hot water pipe – PPR / Copper pipe

DCW Pump Room and tank Space Planning

1. DCW tank shall be away/ separate from electrical rooms.

2. After determine the capacity of DCW tank, work out the tank size.
3. For transfer pump, Vertical in-lined pump to be used, refer to catalogue for
dimension.

4. Allow a minimum distance between tank & pump for pipes & fittings connection.

5. CW riser also need to be size and locate at proper location.

Scope of Work & liaise with External Party

1. Conventionally the scope of work for Plumbing NSC shall start after bulk meter.

2. Incoming piping to DCW & FF tanks usually done by Plumbing NSC.

3. Pipe sleeves at RC tank usually under Main Contract (substructure) scope of work.

4. HDPE lining for DCW RC tank usually under Main Contract scope of work.

5. The scope of work for items stated above may different from project to project and
to be liaise with C&S engineer and QS for confirmation of scope of work.

6. For low rise building (e.g: terrace house), incoming water pressure have to be
determined & check with C&S engineer to ensure that the water pressure is
sufficient to enter into the roof storage tank.

7. No SYABAS submission is required since Jan 2010 and just to submit for record, but
need to provide our water demand calculation to C&S engineer for them to do the
external plumbing submission.

Others items

1. Pressure Reducing valve (PRV) to be installed at every 30m of vertical CW dropper.

2. Silent check valve need to be installed at the pumping main right after the CW
transfer pump.

3. Tap to be provided for areas like AHU room, pump room, and sump pit.

4. Sub-meter to be provided for every condo unit, retails, and areas to be lease to
tenants.
