Limestone Dutchman Repair: Vijay Construction
Limestone Dutchman Repair: Vijay Construction
PROCEDURE
● Remove a Rectangular or Square section of stone from the parent stone as follows: To a
depth of Z inches, remove stone ( X plus or minus Y) inches past the furthest interior point
of the spall. Remove stone (X plus or minus Y) inches above and below the highest and
lowest point of the spall.
● Prepare a replacement stone (Dutchman) of dimensions such that it will fit into the
remaining space left by stone removal.
● The Replacement stone should be custom fabricated. The stone produced today will not
necessarily match the weathered appearance of the in-service stone quarried years or
decades before but matching of the color, texture, grain size, and any veining or
irregularities present in the original stone can be replicated to some extent.
● After proper cleaning the replacement stone can then be installed using mechanical
anchorage, lime mortar and adhesive agents.
● Once the Replaced stone is properly installed, the surfaces must be honed or dressed to
match the original stone, including any special patterns, textures, or finishes.
● The replaced stone is set in mortar and the narrow gaps are filled with fine lime mortar.
