Under the yellow temple tree,
And there they all sit-aged seven, four and three
The small one barely two – a solemn row,
With hungry eyes, their backs against the drain
While their mother does the washing,
In the house across the lane.

They never move nor do they shout or fight

Only occasionally the baby softly wails,
And Mariamma-that‟s what she calls herself
[She is the one who is seven] takes him on
Her lap; and with mosquito bitten arms
She cradles him against her, her black hair
All cut uneven falls and hides her eyes.
