Preface-General Description
Preface

Your Advanced Greig Laminators, Inc. (AGL) AutoTrim III is a finely engineered and designed piece of
equipment.

The AutoTrim III is designed to turn a web into sheets using several different modes of operation. The
ATII can cut to length, sheet with adjustable leading and trailing margins, sheet using a register mark, and
divide a sheet into equal parts.

All parts are machined to prints, ensuring complete interchangeability of all parts, manufactured or
purchased.

i
Installation

Selecting Area

Select an area that has a smooth, level surface for the trimmer to set on, this will allow for easier
maneuverability of the machine if it requires moving later on. The area should be large enough to allow
an operator ample room to properly handle your largest product on the outfeed side of the trimmer and
enough room to walk between the laminator and trimmer. The sides of the trimmer should also be easily
accessible in case service or maintenance is required. AGL approximates this area should be about 2-3
feet in between the laminator and trimmer, 6-7 feet on the output side of the trimmer and 3-4 feet on
either end. This is only a suggestion, your plant and the products to be laminated will be the determining
factor.

Uncrating

Your new trimmer comes fully crated. The crate is designed to be usable for future shipping if required,
so careful disassembly of the crate is important if the crate is to be reused.

Notice: The original shipping crate must be kept during the warranty period. The crates are
design specifically for the trimmer. Failure to use original crate for shipment for warranty work
could cause damage to the machine.

1. The stand legs (if ordered) are located under the top piece of the crate. Remove the screws holding
the top piece on and remove top. Lift the stand legs out and set aside. Reattach the cover using the
screws.
2. Remove the screws around the base of the crate that hold the sides to the base and lift cover/sides
off in one piece. With the cover removed the trimmer, delivery tray and accessory box can be seen.
3. The stop angle for the delivery tray is foam wrapped and can be removed and set aside. The delivery
tray is secured to the lower front tie bar and the idler roller in the rear of the trimmer. Cut the ties and
pull the delivery tray out at an angle. Set aside for final setup.
4. If the stand option was ordered, there will be a box containing the casters and the hardware to mount
the stand legs to the lower tie bars.
5. The clear cover is held in place by clear plastic wrap, remove the wrap to allow the cover to be lifted.
Using a knife to cut the plastic wrap could damage to the cover or roll.

Do Not use a knife or other sharp object to remove the shrink wrap
from the trimmer. This can cause irreparable damage to the laminator
enclosures and rolls.

Machine Assembly/Setup

The trimmer comes standard with leveling feet that are installed through the lower tie bars. Set your
trimmer in the area that it will be operating. Level the machine by placing a level on the tie bars for side to
side level and across the two tie bars for front to back level. Adjust the leveling pads as required to obtain
level in both directions.

If the stand option was ordered, use the hardware included to mount the stand legs to the lower tie bars
and then mount the casters in the stand legs.

The delivery tray comes in two pieces, the tray can be attached to the trimmer by placing the heads of the
bolts into the hooks on either side of the trimmer. Swing the notched arms over the lower tie bar to hold
the tray in position. The stop angle is mounted to the tray by loosening the clamps, and sliding onto the
tray, tighten the clamps wit the stop angle in the desired position.

1-1
Installation
Electrical Connection

The trimmer comes with a power cord attached to the machine. Simply plug the machine into your plant
power supply. (110VAC, 10 amps) A readily accessible disconnect device shall be incorporated into the
fixed wiring circuit. The switch on the trimmer is not considered a disconnect device. Consult a qualified,
licensed electrician to ensure that the power supply for the machine is properly installed in your facility.

Pneumatic Connection

Refer to the Pneumatic Requirements under Specifications for the proper requirements for your laminator.
The air supply should be clean, dry, and regulated. Failure to properly clean and dry the air supplied to
the laminator will cause damage to the cylinder and valve. The trimmer is supplied with a quick
disconnect on the laminator side of the LH cabinet for your final connection.

The air supply to the laminator must be clean and dry. Particles and
moisture can damage the cylinder and valve.

Recycling Packaging

If your machine came in a fully enclosed crate, the crate can be stored flat for future use or dismantled
and the wood can be recycled. The screws can be kept for future use of the crates or stored for some
other use. The shrink wrap is not recyclable and should be thrown away. The foam protective coverings
over the rolls can be recycled to be used for other shipping purposes.

Safety

IMPORTANT
READ THIS SECTION BEFORE OPERATING YOUR TRIMMER

General Machine Safety

The following messages are written here for your safety, all operators and others around the laminator
should read, understand and follow these messages.

1. Read and understand all the safety instructions.

2. Keep this manual in a place where it can be easily referenced by all operators.
3. All connections to components and terminal blocks should be checked for tightness before
initial startup. This will help avoid and electrical problems caused by connections that may
have loosened due to vibration during shipping.
4. Use only the recommended power source to run the trimmer. Consult a qualified and licensed
electrician if you are unsure of the power supply and the safety features of the supply.
5. If power supply cord is run across the floor, provide adequate protection to the cord to avoid damage
from foot traffic, dropped items or rolling items.
6. Do not attempt to service the laminator without qualified personnel available. Damage to the machine
or injury to you could be caused by moving parts or high voltage.
7. Do not operate the trimmer with out all guards in place. If a guard is damaged or not working
properly, replace or repair before returning the machine to operation. If the machine is run without all
guards in place the safety obligation of the manufacturer is null and void.
8. Do not insert fingers, hands, or items into openings in the sideframes or under clear guard. Items
may become entangled in moving parts or in contact with high voltage.
9. Disconnect or lockout power from machine when any service is required and when cleaning the nip
rolls.
10. Disconnect or lockout power from the machine and refer to service personnel if the performance of
the machine changes indicating a problem or if machine does not operate normally to correct
operational procedures.

Operator Safety

Your trimmer is designed to protect the operator from injury when used properly. Do not operate the
machine without all guards and protection devices in place, serious injury could occur.

The nip section can pull you into laminator! Do not place fingers
into the nip section when the rolls are rotating. It is recommended
that operators tie long hair back and not wear neckties, loose
clothing and jewelry since they can be caught in the nip section
and pull the operator into the machine. Proper equipment such as
gloves should be used if the material being trimmed requires it.

3-1
Operation
General

1. Power: A rocker switch switches the main power on and off. The vertical surface above where the
power cord enters the machine.

2. Sensor Teach Button: Used to teach the fiber optic sensor the contrasting differences between the
substrate and the laminate.

3. Fuse: A 10 amp fuse is located in the power switch. If the machine draws more than 10 amps, the
fuse will blow and need to be replaced. Pull the fuse drawer out of switch, replace fuse and replace
the fuse drawer into switch.

4. Operator Interface: The operator interface allows the operator to make selections and adjustments
that will affect the operation of the trimmer. A full explanation of the interface is found in this manual.

4-1
Operation
Operator Interface Control Panel

The Pause button is used to select and highlight adjustable fields on the screens where the
fields are available. Pressing this button once highlights the first field, pressing again will
advance the highlight to the next field, etc.

The Up arrow button is used to scroll up through the different screens. Pressing will advance
the screen to the next screen before the current screen.

The Down arrow button is used to scroll down through the different screens. Pressing will
advance the screen to the next screen after the current screen.

The Return button is used to enter a revised value into an adjustable field. After pressing in
the appropriate value into the field, pressing the return key will write the value into the field and
advance the highlight to the next available field. Pressing the return key after the final field on
the screen will remove the highlight from the screen, allowing program to be run.
This button will also be used to Acknowledge an alarm or information that is on the screen. When this is
required "Ack" will appear above the return button.

The number buttons are used to input numerical data into registers for the different modes. They are also
used to navigate through the menu screens. The screens will tell you which buttons will allow you to
move or select different options. The +/- button is used when the value you want such as the leading
edge or trailing edge needs to be negative.

Note: The 7 button will save the current settings in the controller. This means that all the settings for all
modes will be saved, not just the screen you are currently viewing. Any old settings on the other screens
will be updated. The drive must be stopped in order to save data.

4-2
Operation

Getting Started

The trimmer should be set at a height that positions the first idler roll approximately even with the output
rolls of the laminator. See the diagram below.

Example: X = 42.00, Y = Unknown, Trimmer = 16.50

42.00 - 16.50 = 25.50

The table should be made to a height of 25.50. This dimension can be +/- 3.00

Once the trimmer is set in place and leveled, it must be centered and squared to the laminator that it is
set behind. The trimmer will not work properly if it is not set centered and square to the laminator. Center
the trimmer by locating the centers of both machines and set them inline. To square the trimmer measure
from a tie bar or frame component on the laminator that is square to the rolls to the frame of the trimmer.
Once the measurements are equal, the trimmer is square. If the trimmer is to remain in place behind the
laminator permanently, you may want to consider making two straps to hold the trimmer in its position.

Startup

The power cord is attached to the underside of the RH enclosure and the air connection is located on the
rear of the LH enclosure. Connect the power cord to the trimmer and then to your power supply and
connect an air line to the connector. When the machine is first powered up, the home page will appear
and then change to the Alarm101 screen. This screen tells the operator that the limit switches must be
checked. This is important to remember if there is a jam and the machine must be shut down.

4-3
Operation
Checking the Switches

Checking the switches is required after each time the machine is powered up. The machine needs to
know that both of the reed switches are functioning properly before allowing the operator to proceed to a
mode of operation. The Alarm101 screen as shown below will appear.

When the screen comes up initially it will read, "Switches: Not Checked".

When the "8" key is pressed the trimmer will fire the cutting head to find the switches. It may need to fire
the cut head in both directions, depending on where it started initially.

If both switches are functioning properly the display will read "Switches: Are OK"

Press the return key to go back to the home page.

Note: If the 8 key is pressed without the air connection, the controller will send alarm 104 and 105 to the
screen. The machine must be powered down, air connected, and then powered up again. Press the 8
key to perform the test.

If there is a problem with the switches one of the two screens will appear.

The operator must inspect the switch and replace if necessary. See Inspecting Switches for instruction
on this procedure.

Pressing the return button will take the operator back to the home page, but the trimmer will not run until
the switch problem is fixed.

4-4
Operation
Webbing the Trimmer

The webbing of the trimmer can easily be accomplished by following the proper diagram for the mode
selected and then following these steps.

1. Press the disable button or turn power off, disconnect air source.
2. Fold a sheet of Bond paper in half and insert the open end between the film clamp and the
bottom cutter blade.
3. Using your hand, turn the bottom roller in reverse until the paper is drawn into the rollers and
the open end is sticking out behind the rollers.
4. Insert the web into the open end of the folded paper and rotate the rolls forward, pulling the
paper and web into the nip rolls and through the film clamp. Rotate the rolls until the folded
paper can be removed.
5. Connect air source, turn power on or lift disable button and acknowledge the disable alarm.

Sensor Adjust

Your AutoTrimIII is equipped with a teachable fiber optic sensor. This allows the operator to show the
sensor the two different materials and to "teach" it the difference. The set up the sensor have a piece of
the substrate laminated with film.

1. Turn trimmer on and go through the check switches routine.

2. Disconnect air supply from trimmer. Press the disable button to disable the drive.
3. Laminate a sample of your substrate, leaving a .25-.50” gap between substrates. This will be used to
dynamically teach the sensor.
4. As you can see in the center of the blade angle, there is a red glow coming from underneath the
angle. This is the emitter side of the sensor. The receiver is located directly above it.
5. Move the laminated substrate into the sensor field so that the red glow is seeing through just the
laminate, this will create the "unblocked" mode between the emitter and receiver. Press and hold the
Sensor teach button. The display on the sensor should turn red and read “dyn”.
6. Using your hand to rotate the roller, move the laminated substrate between the “unblocked” and
“blocked” states 7-10 times. As you move the substrate into the sensor, the led across from the 1 on
the display should turn on, then off again as the substrate is removed. After completing the
sequence, release the button. The display on the sensor should turn back to green and flash "Pass"
twice, then return to the reading. If the conditions are unacceptable, the sensor will flash "Fail" and
the operator must repeat the teach process.
7. The LED across from the 1 should illuminate when the field of the sensor is blocked and should be off
when the clear laminate is in the sensor field. Double check your setup by alternating between the
blocked and unblocked states with your sample.

The fiber optic sensor operates on using the difference in contrast between the substrate and the
laminate. The larger the contrast value between selection 1 and 2 the greater the ability for the sensor to
react quickly and as desired. The contrast values are shown below:

500+ = Excellent
100-500 = Good
32-99 = Low
0-31 = Marginal

4-5
Operation

Cutting Width

Your trimmer has the ability to conserve on the amount of air that it uses by adjusting the air cylinder to
travel only the distance necessary to cut the width of web you are running. The adjustments are made by
moving the two sensors on top of the air cylinder.

1. Press the disable button and disconnect the air source.

2. Open the clear cover to give you access to the switches.
3. Loosen screws that hold the switches in place about 1/2 turn
4. Slide sensors to about 2-3" outside the edges of your web. Lightweight film (1.5mil) may
require more distance between switches.
5. Tighten the screws to secure switches. (Do not over tighten, this can damage the sensors)
6. Close the cover
7. Reconnect power and air source.

Regulator settings:
28”: 45 PSI 39”: 55 PSI 51”: 60 PSI 64”: 60 PSI

Warning: Always Run at recommended pressure setting on the trimmer regulator when running
full width of the air cylinder. Do not set at a higher pressure unless using the narrower settings
on the cylinder. Failure to follow this warning may result in damage to the cylinder and trimmer.

4-6
Operation
Sheet Mode

The sheet mode will take the web in the machine and cut it into strips at a width that is entered
through the interface. Press "2" on the home page to select Sheet Mode. Press the down arrow key

13. The speed and width of the strips can be changed while the machine is running. Simply press the
PAUSE button and adjust the values per steps 10 and 11.
Note: Changes in web thickness and width will affect the final length of the sheet. The best way to get the
correct length is to run product through with the desired length in the interface, measure to get the actual
distance, and then add or subtract that value to the value in the interface. This error is created by the
compression of the orings which changes the diameter of the driven roll.
4-7

leave from the actual distance. If the trimmer seems to be cutting ahead of the cut point, you need to
increase the leading margin. You can do this on the fly.
15. The trailing margin is the distance in front of the registration mark you want to cut. If the registration
mark is printed at 2” behind the graphic and you want to flush cut, you would enter “2”,”0”, ”0”, ”0”,

Operation
Enter. If you want to leave a gap behind print you would subtract the distance you want to leave from
the actual distance. If the trimmer seems to be lagging behind the cut point, you need to increase the
trailing margin. You can do this on the fly.
16. The Dist value is the distance between registration marks minus about 1/8”. This is the distance that
the controller will ignore all inputs from the graphics sensor. Since there are going to be areas in the
graphic that may trip the sensor, we need to ignore all of the graphic and start looking for the next
registration mark when the sensor has cleared the graphics area.
17. Be sure that the sensor is positioned directly in front of the first registration mark before starting. If a
mark is missed, the process will need to be restarted by pressing the disable button, moving the
registration mark back directly behind the sensor. Release the disable, and acknowledge the alarm,
then press the “0” button to start the process again. (Note: Highlight must be gone to Start/Stop
process)
18. The speed, leading margin, trailing margin, and Distance can all be adjusted while the trimmer is
running. Simply press the PAUSE button and adjust the values per steps 14,15, and 16.

Operation
Alarm Screens

The alarm screens are used to inform the operator of the status of the machine or process that is being
run. While "Alarm" has a negative connotation, not all the alarm screens are warnings, but merely
information that the drive needs to convey to user. The screens are shown below with a description of
their meaning and purpose.

This alarm is to tell the operator that faults have occurred, but
they were unable to be saved since the drive was running.

Attempt to save the fault to register has failed.

Attempt to find the left reed switch has failed. Please inspect
left switch to find connection problem or failure problem.
Repair or replace if necessary.

Attempt to find the right reed switch has failed. Please

The attempt to save the data input for the process has failed.
The drive must be stopped to save data. Press the "0" button
to stop the drive and attempt save again. This can happen if
the drive was stopped by the dancer. Run a little more film
through and start and stop the drive while the web is moving.

The attempt to save data has failed. Record data and power
machine down. If after power up and resetting of the values,
the attempt to save fails again. Please call for service.

Maintenance
Maintenance

As a result of years of experience, refined engineering and construction techniques, very little time need
be lost to maintenance. However, regular maintenance will keep your laminator operating at its optimum
level.
Removing the enclosure covers to work on machine exposes person
to electrocution and moving parts hazard. Only trained service
personnel should perform maintenance with any guards or covers
removed.

Cleaning Components

Cleaning the drive roll may require the

drive rolls to be rotating. Rotate the rolls
at a very slow rate to avoid being pulled
into the nip section. Do not wear neck ties, loose clothing or hanging
jewelry that could be pulled into the nip section.

The drive roll and the 0- rings on the cutter wheel assembly should be cleaned as often as necessary, the
frequency will vary on the products used and the processes being run. AGL recommends a mild
detergent solution or denatured alcohol with a 100% lint free cloth to clean the rolls.

Be careful when cleaning the O-rings on

the cutter wheel assembly, the rotary
blade and lower blade are very sharp. Injury could occur if care is not
taken.

Use of incorrect solvents on your O-rings

can cause irreparable damage. Advanced
Grieg Laminators,Inc. is not responsible
for damage to O-rings caused by these solvents.

Clean the film clamp, upper clamp rolls, idler rollers, cover, cabinets and cylinder as required with a mild
detergent solution or denatured alcohol with a 100% lint free cloth.

Keep the photo-optic orifice clean and free of debris at all times.

Daily Maintenance

Drain the air filter/regulator by pressing the rubber drain actuator located under the left hand cabinet. This
may need to be done more often if the plant air system has excessive water or lubricant in it.

Check to make sure excess wire on stroke limit switches are pushed into cabinets and out of the way of
the incoming web.

Monthly Maintenance

Check the slide on the air cylinder for excessive play. Tighten if necessary (1/8 of a turn at a time). Be
sure the slide moves easily after tightening.
