Key Concepts!

Melody is the arrangement of musical tones of different pitches that form a pleasing tune. Melody is the
most remembered element of music. Each tone you hear in music has a pitch. Pitch is the highness and
lowness of sound. Pitches may be low, medium or high.

A high pitch sound has a light and thin sound.

A low pitch sound has a heavy and thick sound.

A medium pitch sounds not high nor low.

Aside from hearing music, you can also read and write with the help of musical symbols. One of the most
important musical symbols is the staff.

A staff is a musical symbol with five lines and four spaces. We always begin counting from the bottom. The
staff is where all musical symbols are written.

Each line and space has a letter name. These are the first seven letters we borrowed from the alphabet.
The letters names of the lines of the staff can be memorized through a sentence code Every Good Boy
Does Fine.

For the names of the spaces just remember the word F A C E.

4
Pitches are represented by notes written on the staff.
