INSTALLATION & INSTRUCTION MANUAL

Ⅰ.Introduction on SUNDEZ ground source heat pump

Sundez ground source heat pump is a heating system designed for operation as
brine/water or water/water heat pump. The heat pump extracts energy from the heat
source medium i.e. brine at a low temperature level. This extracted energy is then
transferred to the heating water at a higher level, enriched with the energy
transferred by the compressor. The underground heat can be transferred through
the horizontal or vertical underground loop system. The heating water can be heated
up to a flow temperature of 55℃.

1. Characteristics
● High quality construction
Cabinet--Standard unit fabrication consists of heavy gage galvanized sheet metal
cabinet construction that provides maximum strength. All exterior sheet metal
surfaces are powder-coated for maximum corrosion protection to ensure resilience
for long term vitality. Compact, stackable cabinets are designed to minimize
installation space.
Compressor--Standard high-efficiency scroll compressor design for all units.
Compressor isolating springs are specially selected for each compressor size.
Refrigerant/water circuit--Units have a sealed refrigerant circuit including scroll
compressor(S). Refrigerant circuits are provided with a standard thermostatic
expansion valve(TEV) for higher accuracy and performance. The condenser and
evaporator are brazed stainless steel SUS316# plate heat exchangers with the
highest heat exchanging efficiency, outstanding ability against high pressure and
lower water quality.

● Quiet operation
The whole unit is designed for quiet operation. Compressor isolating springs are
specially selected for each compressor size. The floating design of the compressor
support with rubber isolators which completely separate the compressor from the
cabinet, to minimize vibrations to the unit structure.

● Built-in Hydraulic module, easy installation(Optional)

Hydraulic module(flow switch, expansion tank, water pumps, 3 way solenoid valve is
built-in.

INSTALLATION & INSTRUCTION MANUAL

2. Pipeline installation system notice

2.1. The water quality requirements: it should be noted the water quality problems,
furring and other impurity will have great impact to the normal operation of the
system. Therefore, the circulating water should go thought pre-filtration before inflow
to the system, and be soften. Please see”water requirements” chapter.

2.2. Please use pipe pincer to clamp the unit pipes, and then use another to fasten
the connection. Do not use a pipe pincer clamp to unit with fasten connection directly,
otherwise the pipes would damaged due to excessive torque, resulting in pipe crack
and leakage.

2.3. Circulation pump should be installed at the heat pump inlet. The expansion tank
should be installed at the entrance of circulation pump. Filters should be installed at
the circulation heat pump water inlet to avoid sundries blocking heat exchangers.

2.4. Water treatment to avoid damage to heat exchangers if the water quality is poor.

2.5.Air vent must be installed in the piping system to improve water system operating
efficiency.

2.6. Water flow switch must be set up in the water pipes, and be wired to the heat
pump controller system.

2.7. The water pipe construction and design must have anti-freeze, to prevent
damage to the heat pump. Ethylene glycol and propanol can be added in the water as
antifreeze.

2.8. In order to avoid the pipe to freeze when the het pump has a long downtime in
winter, the water should be discharged out from the piping system.

2.9. All pipes should be well insulated with thermal insulation, to reduce heat loss at
the most extent and keep high efficiency.

2.10. The inside of all water pipes must be cleaned before they are installed into the
water system.

2.11. The heat pump does not apply to open-water systems. Pollution of recycled
water would cause damage to the unit.

3. Installation of the heat source system

3.1. Required water quality

Frequent problems with the operation of ground source heat pumps are as follows:
(1). Erosion on the evaporator and the water feed pipes,
(2). Sludge deposits or blockage inside the evaporator and feed pipes.
(3). Blockage of the return well.

To prevent these problems, the quality of the water used as heat source water must
meet the following condition:

- 12 -

Downloaded from www.Manualslib.com manuals search engine

INSTALLATION & INSTRUCTION MANUAL

(1). The water must not contain particles that cause sediment.
(2). The following limits regarding water scale must be maintained to prevent the
evaporator and the pipelines suffering from sludge deposits and blockage.

3.2. Never use surface water or saline water.

3.3. Circulation pump

Size the circulation pump of the heat source system in accordance with the system-
specific conditions, i.e. take the nominal flow rate and pressure drop (see
specification) , and heigh difference between the heat pump and the water tank into
consideration.
Connect the power wire and communication wire with control board correctly
according to the drawing diagram of control main board.

3.4. Water temperature

(1). The heat pump can work with water inlet temperature down to +7℃ in the well. If
such temperature is possible, for example after snow has melted, water of lower
temperature lower than 4℃ must not constantly be supplied to return wells.
(2). The closed underground loop can be as low as -5℃ with the heat pump. Please
add anti-freeze (glycol) according to the lowest water temperature, pressure drop
and corrosion condition.

3.5. Filter
Install the dirt filter in the well pipes to prevent the coming-up sand etc from blocking
the evaporator.
Install appropriate pre-filters and settlement basins if there is higher level of solid
particles transported in the well water. The evaporator can be flushed after removing
the connections fittings.

3.6. Connection
Connect the heat source circuit with flexible pressure hoses between heat pump and
water pipes, to prevent the transmission of noise.

3.7. Checking the flow rate

(Do it during heat pump commissioning)
Measure the flow volume and return temperature of the heat source. Determine the
temperature differential by measuring the temperature below the thermal insulation
on both flow and return pipes of the heat pump.
At temperature below 4℃ , the heat pump will enter anti-freeze mode.
Please check the heat source inlet temperature on the controller.

4. Installation of the heat consumer system

4.1 Install the heat consumer system(heating circuit) in accordance with current
technical guidelines and local regulations.
Prior to connect the heat pump, check the heating system for leakage, flush it
thoroughly, fill and carefully vent it.
Pay attention to the following when filling the system with heating water:
(1).During the service life of the system, the total of the fill and top-up water must not
exceed three times of the nominal volume of the heating system.
(2).The total alkaline earths in the water must be < 3.0 mol/m3.
(3). The total water hardness must be < 3 mmol/L,and
(4). Soften the water, if the above conditions can not be satisfied.
- 13 -

Downloaded from www.Manualslib.com manuals search engine

INSTALLATION & INSTRUCTION MANUAL

Generally soften the heating water, if the specific system volume > 20L/KW output
(e.g. system with buffer tank).
Check the correct connection of heating flow. The reduction of structure-borne
vibrations on the water side requires the installation of flexible pressure hoses.
Fit the thermal insulation in accordance with local regulations on heating systems.

4.2. Buffer tank

A buffer tank is recommended to ensure stable heat pump operation. The buffer tank
provides hydraulic separation of the volume flow in the heat pump circuit and the
heating circuit.

4.3. Circulation pump

Size the circulation pump on the heating side taking the condenser pressure drop
and the pipeline pressure drop into consideration. Make sure the nominal flow rate of
the heat pump under all operating conditions of the heating system by installing an
overflow valve.

4.4. Heat meter

Observe the additional pressure drop when installing heat meters on the heating
side. The sieve inside the heat meters are easily blocked by dirt particles in the
heating circuit, further increasing the pressure drop.

4.5. Oxygen diffusion

Steel components, such as radiators and pipes, can corrode if plastic under floor
heating system pipes, which are permeable to oxygen, are used.
The product of corrosion, i.e. rusty sludge, can settle inside the heat pump
evaporator and can lead to output loss through a reduction of cross-section or in a
heat pump shutdown triggered by the high pressure limiter.
So, we advise to avoid open heating system or the installation of steel pipes
conjunction with plastic pipes in underfloor heating systems, which are permeable to
oxygen.

4.6 Scaling
Water quality, operating conditions and the water volume are decisive factors to the
extent of scaling. To prevent damage to valves, heat exchanger and heating
elements, check the water condition and assess it in accordance with local
regulations.

5. Electrical Connection

5.1 The power for the heat pump should be independent. Do not share with other
electrical power.

5.2. The ground line of the power must be connected correctly to prevent creepage
accident.

5.3. Shunt wire and main wire: the safe current of the smallest diameter of shunt wire
is 1.5 times as much as the heat pump running current. The safe current of the
smallest diameter of main wire is 1.5 times as much as heat pump running current.

- 14 -

Downloaded from www.Manualslib.com manuals search engine

INSTALLATION & INSTRUCTION MANUAL

5.4. Running power:

1).allow voltage range: rated voltage ± 10%.
2).allow the frequency range: rated frequency ± 2%.
3).allow the three-phase unbalance voltage: ± 2.25%.
4).allow the three-phase unbalance current: ± 5%.

5.5. The electrical wire of power to unit should be laid in accordance with
construction regulations and standards, and have good insulation.

5.6.Electrical parameters on unit nameplate as the standard operation parameters,

selection of power, transformers, magnetic contactor, non-fuse switches, wiring
should consider the worst working conditions. Wiring in strict accordance with the
documents and notes of unit.

6. Commissioning

6.1.Check unit power supply ground lead.

6.2.Check the air condition circulatory system and ground-source side circulatory
system is filled with water, pipeline exclude air, and the water valve is in the open
position.

6.3.Check the pipeline valve is placed in the correct position.

6.4.Check the power supply voltage is correct.

6.5. Water pump and pipe commissioning:change the jump 5 of main control board
of “FUNCTION SETTING” into ON, and press the key of “ON/OFF” on controller, you
can start to debug water pump and pipe system. Check if the rotation direction of
water pump is right, if the water flow switch work right, and exhaust all air from pipe.

6.6. Running commissioning: change the jump 5 of “FUNCTION SETTING” into OFF,
and press the key of “ON/OFF” on controller to start the heat pump, and record the
temperature of ground water inlet/outlet and temperature of heating water
inlet/outlet, and confirm if they meets the requirement. Normal difference between
Brine inlet and Brine outlet is 3-7 degree, normal difference between heating inlet
and heating outlet is also around 3-7 degree.

6.7.Soft starter
The soft boot relay in single-phase heat pump can reduce the starting current, about
0.5 times, in order to reduce the impact of the power grid, avoiding start from
excessive current worry .

6.8.Attention!
(1)Frequently boot compressor will have an impact on the life of the compressor, the
compressor can be stopped after running 90 seconds, restart more than 180
seconds!
(2)Strong advice: Do not start and stop frequently. Do not cut unit power directly!
(3).Don’t cut off the power when the system is taken out of use. This retains the
safety functions designed to protect the system (e.g. anti-freezed protection)
(4).Drain the water side of the equipment, if the heat pump is taken out of use at a
location subject to a risk of frost.

7. Cleaning

(1). Evaporator
In case well water sediment settles inside the evaporator, where it can form a
sludge, clean the evaporator by flushing it via its connectors (heat source inlet and
outlet).
(2). Condenser
In case of heat pump faults (e.g. high pressure limiter trips) through deposits of
corrosion products (rust sludge) inside the condenser, only dissolving them by
means of solvents used by our customer service will remove this problem.
(3). Dirt filter
After heat pump runs for 24 hours, the filter of water pump inlet must be clean;
Clean the dirt filter regularly, subject to the level of contamination of the well water.
Where heat meters are installed, frequently clean their sieves, which block easily.

8.Water quality standards

Unit fault caused by poor water quality can be broadly divided into: Corrosion
(condenser pipe broke down), scale (high-voltage accidents), and algae mud
(micro-organisms). Unit fault is serious particularly caused by poor ground water
quality, so no using groundwater absolutely. The problem of poor water quality listed
as follows:

8.1.Corrosion: Corrosion of metal will cause water leakage. If corrosion occurs in

the internal condenser, then cooling pipe will be cankered, The cooling pipes, even
the entire condenser need to be replaced. Besides, corrosion would lead to system
high pressure protection. Corrosion may be caused by several reasons.
A. Poor water quality can canker metal, the standard of water quality shown in the
table below.
B. Even if the water quality is good, it would will also canker metal once corrosion
happen.
C. The faster the flow rate, the sooner the metal corrosion, so cooling water must
follow the standard.
D. If the sand or dust entered into the cooling pipe, which accumulated will
accelerate corrosion.
E. Algal mud will also accelerate corrosion.

8.2.Scale: The scale on the inner surface which in the cooling pipe, not only
impede heat conduction directly, but also reduced the cooling water, high-pressure
switch stop finally. In addition, the scale will make condenser and cooling pipe
cankered, even pinhole. Scale may be caused by following reasons:

A. cooling water containing CaCO 3, SiO 2, Fe and other elements, after the cooling
water circulate a long time, the water evaporate, the concentration gradually
increased, exceeded solubility, elements deposit on the wall.
B. corrosion products remain in the tube.
C. algae mud flow into the tube by water.
D. sand and dust mix in the tube.

8.3.Algal mud: algae mud formed under the following conditions, food, proper
temperature, oxygen and sunlight (sunlight sometimes do not need), when the
cooling tower have suitable conditions for the formation of these microorganisms,
pipeline will be blocked or cankered quickly.

Circulating cooling water treatment mainly to resolve the water scale, corrosion,
fouling and microbiological. Specifically, control of corrosion rate is less than 0.125
(mm / a); year dirt coefficient 0.00017 ~ 0.00052m 2 • K / W, the anaerobic bacteria
per milliliter of water is less than 10 3. In order to achieve the above requirements, it is
necessary to add appropriate scale inhibitors to prevent scaling, add corrosion
inhibitor to prevent corrosion, add peeling biocide to eliminate microorganisms.
However, the situation is not very simple, because the impact are many factors, such
as added water quality, recycled water concentration multiple, recycling water
quality, flow rate, structure and materials of heat exchanger, process fluid leakage
and water temperature, every factory is different. Therefore, the circulating cooling
water treatment prescription is not the same.
First, to control the content of Ca 2 +, decrease it to make the water soften. The
following four methods for users to have a reference:
1. Ion exchange resin method
2. Scale Inhibitor
3. Corrosion inhibitor
4. Biocide

Note:
(1) Cooling water means water through the condenser, whether through one or
cycle.
(2) Use of plastic pipe, the value is less than 0.5ppm.
(3) Proposed factor, although knowing that a great impact on water quality, but no
real evidence,
it adopted the "Proposal".
(4) Use of anti-rust, the value allowed to 1,000 ppm.
(5) When the water quality does not comply with the above table, it is necessary to
add water treatment equipment, to ensure that unit can operate normally.

According to relevant information: water PH <6.5, hardness of <50mg / L, have a

corrosive effect on copper; carbon dioxide> 50mg / L, high solubility and hardness of
groundwater will canker copper. Therefore, recommends that customers should pay
attention to water quality standards

INSTALLATION & INSTRUCTION MANUAL

Ⅳ.Maintenance

1. Unit has been strictly tested before ex-factory. It has been in the best working
condition. Please do not adjust by self.

2. The filter at water inlet of water pump should be washed after the heat pump runs
for the first 24 hours.

3. Frequent booting of the heat pump is strictly prohibited. It can not be more than 6
times/hr.

4. The power source should not be disconnected during normal use.

5. Power should be shut down when the heat pump is without occupation for long
time. Power should be turn on to the heat pump again 12-24 hours before re-use.

6. Regularly check the water pipe heat preservation effect. Never cut off the power
supply in winter. No occupation for long time requires discharging all water out from
the water system, to avoid pipe frost crack.

7. Heat exchangers should be cleaned at least twice a year to maintain good effect of
heat transfer.

8. For difficulties which can not be come over, please contact our after-sales service.

INSTALLATION & INSTRUCTION MANUAL

Ⅴ. System planning
1. Basic knowledge
1.1 Radiant Heating

Radiant heat is the most healthiest form of

heating. The larger the heating surface, the lower
the temperature of the radiant heat, the gentler the
heat emission and the more comfortable we feel.

Using radiant heat you have the same level of

comfort with an air temperature inside the room
which is 2 centigrade lower compared with heat
generated by radiators. And reducing the room
temperature by about 2℃ saves up to 10% of
heating cost per year.

1.2 What heat source to use

Tip: The heat source with the highest temperature level brings the highest coefficient
of performance and thus lowest heating costs.

Ground water as heat source

If groundwater is available at reasonable depth and

temperature, you can achieve the highest COP. A constant
temperature from +8℃ to +12℃ guarantees an optional
heating source. The groundwater is pumped from the
delivery well to the heat pump and from there 15 meters to
the sink well. The second best heat source is soil if
groundwater is not available.

Ground as heat source

Horizontal collectors use about 98% solar

heat stored in the ground. The soil
temperature stays at a considerably high
level of temperature even during very cold
winter days, enough to heat your home.
There are different ways to use the energy
from the soil.
Horizontal collectors are located around
1~2 meters deep. They consist of tube-
circuits in which a heat transfer medium
circulates acting as a heat transport from
the ground to the heat pump.
- 27 -

Downloaded from www.Manualslib.com manuals search engine

INSTALLATION & INSTRUCTION MANUAL

Depending on the heat transporting medium you can use systems with brine or with
refrigerant.

Ground heat collectors will be used if there is enough flat space (garden surface).
This system needs the lowest investment costs. You will need an area of 1 to 1.5
times the area inside the house to be heated.

Borehole heat exchanger are the solution where you have practically no space
available. They are drilled about 65-100m deep and use a good portion of geothermal
energy.

For some heat sources you will need an authorization.

Heat capacity of ground collector

Ground type Specific abstraction capacity

Heating hours per year for heat pump for 1,800h for 2,400h
Dry, non-cohesive ground (sand) approx. 10W/m2 approx. 8W/m2
Cohesive ground, damp approx. 25W/m2 approx. 20W/m2
Saturated ground (sand, gravel) approx. 40W/m2 approx. 32W/m2
Remark: Specific abstraction capacities according to VDI4640, with an installation
clearance of 0.8m.

1.3 How to selection the right heat pump system

Determine the required heating capacity

With heat pumps, exact dimensioning is important, because oversized systems
cause excessive costs and operate with lower efficiency. The determination of the
heat requirement is made according to the individual country standards in Germany
(DIN 4701), Austria (OENORM 7500 (B 8135)) and Switzerland (IA 380-1, SIA 384-
2).

The heat requirement is indicated in kW. The following values are expected
approximate figures (heat requirement W/m 2):

• Old building with appropriate thermal insulation: 75 W/m 2

• New building with good thermal insulation: 50 W/m 2
• Low-energy building: 30 W/m 2

The specific heat requirement (W/m 2) per heated floor space is multiplied by the m 2
and results in the entire heat requirement (transmission and ventilation heat
requirement).

The yearly heating requirement in kWh per annum gives an amount of how much
heating energy (heat) is required during the heating period. This figure has to be
remembered when determining the size of a ground coupled system.

1.4 Electric cut-off times

Utilities often offer a reduced price for electricity for a heat pump. Thus they reserve
the right to interrupt the supply at certain periods of the day. The current supply can
be interrupted for example 3 x 2 hours within 24 hours. Therefore the daily
requirement of heat must be produced within that time, in which the heat pump can
operate.

Example: Theoretical interruption 3 times 2 hours; calculated heat requirement

without cuts 9 kW.
Maximum cut 3 x 2 hours = 6 hours. That results in 18 hours of availability.
Theoretical heat requirement with 6 hours of cut:

9 kW x 24h/18h = 12 kW (i.e. 33% surcharge)

Tip: The calculation of the heat requirement includes the lowest possible
temperature which in reality
barely happens. Also the rooms in a house are barely fully all heated at the same
time. Therefore in
practice a minor multiplier of approx. 20 % has been proven as sufficient, especially
with underfloor
heating: e.g. 9 kW x 1.2 = 10.8 kW.

1.4 Heating flow temperature

The name of the game is: The lower the heating-system-temperature, the higher the
coefficient of performance (multiplier) of the heat pump and the lower the heating

costs. In order to achieve this, a wide surface of the heating elements have to be
selected. Ideally for low-temperature under-floor heating and wall heating 35 °C
flow-temperature is used. Furthermore low temperature radiant heat guarantees
maximum comfort. With conventional radiator heating, a flow temperature of max. 55
°C inlet temperature should be chosen.

1.6 Hot water with the heat pump

If one does not select an individual Heat Recovery&Ventilation Hot Water Heat Pump
for the water heating from exhaust air, heating the water with the heating heat pump
is recommended. As a rule of thumb one should plan an additional heating capacity
of approx. 0,25 kW per person. SUNDEZ offers several efficient solutions, which
depending on the heat pump type and heating system, can be used effectively.
