It extends over 146,280 hectares or 1,468.8 km².[2] In the two foothills of the Eastern Cordillera
of the Andes to the basins of the Nangaritza, Numbala and Loyola rivers. About 85% of the
park is in the province of Zamora Chinchipe and about 15% in the province of Loja.
The national park was established in order to protect the largest romerillo forest in the country,
made up of three species of the genus Podocarpus, the only conifer native to Ecuador.
Within the park a unique biological environment has developed, especially represented by the
unique avifauna in the area. The Podocarpus National Park is home to a complex of more than
100 lagoons, one of the best known being the Lagunas del Compadre. There are also waterfalls,
canyons and various kinds of mammals and plants.
To access the park there are two main entrances corresponding to its biogeographical zones,
one is in the Cajanuma Sector in the high biogeographical zone. The other is in the
Bombuscaro Sector, corresponding to the Bombuscaro River in the low biogeographic zone. In
addition, there are two alternative accesses in the high biogeographic zone of the province of
Zamora Chinchipe, one is in the Romerillos Sector, corresponding to the Jamboé River and

another

GENOESE ISLAND
What should you know?
Genovesa Island occupies about 14 km2 and its maximum elevation is 64 m
The horseshoe-shaped island has a volcanic caldera whose wall has collapsed, forming the
great Darwin Bay, surrounded by cliffs
The centrally located Laguna Arcturus is filled with salt water and the sediments in its crater
are less than 6,000 years old.
Although no historical eruptions of Genovesa are known, there are relatively young lava flows
on the flanks of the volcano. This peripheral island is located in the northeastern part of the
archipelago. Many cruises cannot include it because of the long distance that must be traveled
to reach it (it takes at least 8 hours each way).

Fauna
Its palo santo forest is full of frigate birds and their bustling activity, pairs of swallow-tailed
gulls, the only nocturnal gulls in the world, and red-footed boobies, with hiring red feet and blue
bills.
Lava gulls, yellow crowned and lava herons, curlews and other birds feed near the shorebirds,
Darwin’s finches, masked boobies, red-billed tropicbirds that nest on this island. If you are
