APO ON THE WALL

Q&A #4
Who is Apo in the
poem? Cite evidence to
support your answer.
WHO? EVIDENCE?
Answer.

The poem Apo on the Wall is based on the Marcos

regime's martial law. From lines 7 to 9, the author
explicitly mentioned that Apo was the child's
father's supervisor. It's about the viewpoint of a
child about martial law. Even so, the reader was left
with the impression that Martial Law was in
existence. Apo is powerful, and he is none other than
Ferdinand Marcos, the notorious dictator.
Lines 7 to 9.

SECOND QUESTION

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE
PERSONA'S FATHER AND APO?
WHAT DOES THIS TELL US ABOUT
THE FATHER'S PERSPECTIVE
ABOUT MARTIAL LAW?
SECOND QUESTION
Answer.
The characters in the poem "Apo on the Wall" are Persona
and Persona's. This poetry is set during the period of
Martial Law. It describes the experiences of people at the
time, particularly a youngster.

This poem is written from the perspective of a child who is

different from the grownups when it comes to martial law.
According to the perception of the persona, people are
well-organized. Whereas the perception of the persona's
father shows that he is demonstrating Apo even when he is
not there, he respects that.
Answer.

The relationship between apo and the persona of the father

is based on the two people's loyalty to whatever apo
decides the persona's father must do. The persona's father
appears to have a relationship with Apo — similar to that
of a loyal servant and a monarch. This same father wants to
teach his child about respect and discipline, and the man
means that you should respect and listen to the elderly.
QUESTION #3

What kind of values does

the persona's father want
to teach his child,
specifically, about what
it means to be a man? Do
you agree with these
values? Why or why not?
Answer.
Respect is something Persona's father wants to instill in
his son. He believes that in order to be successful in
life, one must respect others. Respect is one of the most
important values in his life. He wanted his children to
succeed, so he instilled in them the value of respect.
Discipline and respect for elders and those much higher in
authority, even if they are not present, are qualities
that the father wishes to instill in his child.
Answer.
We agree with these terms as students and teenagers. We must learn to
respect and listen to the elderly. The final line, "I know what you're
doing," implies that everyone should be cautious. If we treat others
with respect, they will treat us with respect as well. If they do not,
it is sufficient to do the right thing, because the right thing will
always be right.

Respect from others is important because it allows us to feel safe and

express ourselves. Respect means accepting someone for who they are,
even if they are different from you or you disagree with them. Respect
fosters feelings of trust, safety, and well-being in your
relationships. As the golden rule states, treat others as you would
like to be treated.
WHY IS APO COMPARED TO
THE "SCARY" JESUS IN
THE HALLWAY? WHAT DO
THEY HAVE IN COMMON?
QUESTION #4
ANSWER.
Apo is compared to the “scary” Jesus in the hallway
because they are both powerful and from the lines of
22-24 are the lines that show how powerful Apo is.

22 his eyes following me like he was

23 that scary Jesus in the hallway, saying
24 I know, I know what you’re doing.
ANSWER.
The last line of that photo of Apo on the wall was
already looking at me while I moved around and scary
is this photo that symbolizes Ferdinand Marcos as the
president that time. Ferdinand Marcos, the former
president and dictator, is known as Apo. Because
Marcos and his men always kept an eye on everyone
during Martial Law, he is compared to the scary Jesus
in the hallway.

THE METAPHOR OF
FILIPINO LIFE
Q&A #5
SAFE SURVIVAL #1 : What are
you willing to sacrifice for
the good of the nation? Would
you be willing to die for
your country?
Answer.

For us, we are willing to sacrifice our own lives for this
nation. If this is the solution to change the country, we
will risk our own life. Like soldiers, they are willing to
die for their patriotism for their country, for each of its
citizens individually, and, finally, to protect their
country's freedom. All of these reasons express lofty and
admirable reasons for laying down one's life. A soldier may
die in combat while carrying out their mission. Other
ordinary citizens would feel the same way, especially if
they wished to protect the country as a whole. People do
this for a variety of reasons.
SAFE SURVIVAL #2 : If you had
children, do you think your
decision would still be the
same? Why or why not?
Answer.

In terms like this, we’re certain that an individual would

change or be in conflict whether they would do this action
or not. Due to the attention and time would certainly be
divided between the children and there would be a big risk
of not coming back to them. We all have our own perspective
on life and on what matters most. Most likely parents
wouldn’t want to leave their children alone, that's how a
parent's love is but then again it would be different per
person. For us, we would be conflicted on what to do.
SAFE SURVIVAL #3 : When
parents decide to be part of a
revolution, how do you think
this would affect their
children? Explain.
Answer.

Bad things normally happen in war, and nobody wants

that. As parents they easily understand or decide what
their decision will be but as a child, we don't want any
bad things to happen. It is much more important to
understand what revolution means and use our mind and
freedom to understand.
It would cause a great deal of disorder because we, as
children, have never consented to see our beloved
parents into disarray like a revolution, and we all know
that the phrase revolution includes war, so as a child,
it might mean and influence us greatly.

#1. WHY ARE SO

MANY FILIPINO
POOR?
FOR ALL GROUP. POVERTY
Answer.
Although the Philippines is one of the fastest growing economies in Asia, poverty
remains a significant problem. The causes of poverty in the Philippines include high
population growth, low agricultural productivity, and absence of country-wide
employment opportunities.

Many Filipinos are impoverished as a result of a lack of education, difficulty

finding steady employment, and government inaction. In order to obtain secure
employment in the Philippines, you must at least complete high school. In terms of
financial assistance, the government is not generous. The majority of Filipinos rely
on government handouts, which do not last long.
In comparison to the wealthier population, the poorest people work in agriculture
and live in areas prone to natural disasters. There are not enough good jobs
available.
We protect monopolies and unproductive industries under its cover. Like Japan and
Taiwan, we did not pursue land reforms. It's not so much about the growth of the
rural economy as it is about making it more productive and marketable.

#2. WHEN MALES

LOSE THEIR JOBS IN
THE PH, DOES IT
MEAN THEY LOSE
THEIR MANHOOD?
FOR ALL GROUP. POVERTY
Answer.
We have never heard of "If a man loses a job it
means they lose their manhood", losing a job as a
male it does not define the male’s manhood. There
are many ways to prove your manhood, and a job
shouldn’t be the only means to do it. You can’t pin
employment as the standard for manliness; jobs
don’t necessarily manifest a male’s manhood

#3. WHY ARE SO MANY PEOPLE

NUMB OF THE FACT THAT MANY
FILIPINOS ARE STARVING?
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT
BEGGARS ON THE STREET? WHY
DO YOU FEEL THAT WAY?

FOR ALL GROUP. POVERTY

Answer.
Many individuals are unconcerned with the fact that
many Filipinos are hungry because they are too
preoccupied with their own affairs or work to see
the beggars on the street.

There are a lot of effects of poverty in the

Philippines that make it difficult for people to
live in such circumstances. For us, we feel sorry
for those beggars on the street because you can
clearly see them struggling.

FOR ALL GROUP Q&A.

#1. Who usually eats Lengua?

#2. What does Lengua taste
like? Why does Lengua look
like?
#3. Have you ever eaten Lengua?
Would you like to try it or eat
it again? Why or why not?
LENGUA
Answers. LENGUA FOR ALL GROUPS.

Lengua, or beef tongue, is a common Filipino dish. Lengua

is a beloved Filipino dish that features beef tongue.
Lengua has a milder flavor that has a soft, melt in your
mouth texture. Lengua will take on the taste of spices or
sauce in which it was cooked. When one of our members
tasted it, they said it was just like normal meat and it
was very tender and soft. The flavor is very distinct but
it can also absorb the flavor of whatever it is cooked
with.

THE SAFE HOUSE

Q&A #5
DO YOU SYMPATHIZ MORE
WITH THE VISITORS OF THE
NARRATOR? WHY DO YOU FEEL
THIS WAY?
ANSWER.

Some of us, choose the narrator

because she/he already knows the
meaning behind those stories.

While some say both, that they are

both victims of the Marcos
dictatorship during martial law.

WHY DID THE MOTHER LEAVE?

DO YOU UNDERSTAND THIS
DECISION? WOULD YOU HAVE
LEFT AS WELL? WHY OR WHY
NOT?
ANSWER.
She may not be able to take care of the child. I know a
mother has to support that child until her very death. When
a mother leaves her child the child feels abandoned and has
issues around it all their life.
Some of us said that “No, I don’t get it. Why would you
renege on your decisions, after all? Having a child was a
choice. No, I wouldn’t because no matter how terrible things
are, you must battle on and not give up.” which also has a
point. Through the reaction of every member in our group,
you can clearly tell people will always have various
perspectives over any literature.

HOW DOES THE NARRATOR'S VIEW

OF MARTIAL LAW DIFFER FROM
HER FATHER'S VIEW? WHY DOES
SHE HAVE A DIFFERENT POINT OF
VIEW?
ANSWER.

The narrator’s perspective on martial law differs

from that of her father. What they do bring is
kept protected inside their thoughts. The tiny,
small child does not understand what martial law
is after reading these sentences taken from the
text. She believes everything went well. Though
the year of martial law is still controversial and
debatable, this story gives a great account of
what it was like to be in those exact years.
WHAT EFFECT DOES READING THIS STORY
HAVE ON YOU? HOW DOES IT AFFECT THE
WAY YOU LOOK AT MARTIAL LAW? WHAT DID
YOU FEEL ABOUT IT BEFORE YOU READ THE
STORY, AND AFTER YOU READ THE STORY?
ANSWER.
It affected our perspective of martial law in general,
especially with regards to the people who were against
it. We thought that martial law was something that
people could not defy but we were wrong.
Some of us said that it has an impact on our opinion on
martial law, particularly for those who are opposed to
it, such as his father, who is willing to sacrifice
himself for our country's independence. At first, you’ll
mistook it for a safe haven where you are safe and
secure. However, after reading the story, we all feel
deeply sad for the girl because her home is no longer a
safe place.
