Course Description:

This course provides the students with critical perspectives in understanding and way of knowing popular culture in the Philippines. The course
gives emphasis on popular culture through the study of Cultural Studies with a strong focus on culture industry; provides multi-disciplinal attention on
how art can be explored in popular culture and vice versa. This will take place by having an introductory survey on aesthetics, critical theory and art
criticism. This subject will provide students with the necessary tools of analysis on exploring the diverse forms of arts by utilizing the everyday contexts of
power, mode of production, representations and subjectivity as critical tropes. Pop Culture will be fleshed out through mixed media culture such as visual
culture, geography, cinema, music/sound, popular prints and publications, radio and television, fashion, ads, cyberspace, experience, economy etc. and
look at how these cultural products intimate the contemporary social relations and life—specifically, the affect, feelings and senses, corporeality,
performances, space and place, technology, globalization and identities.

Course Outcomes:
At the end of the semester, the students can:

1. Build on students’ ability to engage and relate critically with popular culture texts; Identify and evaluate different kinds of government
2. Explain the influence of Filipino culture on the way students look at moral experiences;
3. Appraise students to contemporary concepts, issues and trends especially in the Philippine context and how Pop Culture impacts on constructions of
identity; and
4. Demonstrate content knowledge and its application to learning process.

Introduction:

The course introduces and explores the concept of popular culture within the context of Philippine context. A multi-disciplinary approach will be utilized
to explore the evolution of pop culture in the country, providing the students with the necessary tools of analysis to explore the various mediums in which it is
embedded in. The course will discuss how pop culture is present in everyday life: how it simultaneously influences and is being influenced by the feelings,
performances, and identities of the Filipino people.

1. The class code for Google Classroom specific for this course is to be given by your instructor during the class orientation.
2. Schedule properly your reading assignments and your activity accomplishments.
3. Make sure that you do things one at a time. Read the materials and watch the videos over and over until you are able to get the point of the lesson
4. You will be assessed through formative and summative methods. Kindly see requirements section at the end of this learning packet.
5. You are expected to submit your activities/ exams on the dates indicated in this learning packet. Late submission of activities/ exams will be dealt based
on classroom policies.
6. Your scores for assignments will be notified to you throughout your period of study.
7. You can learn a great deal from discussing aspects of your learning packet with others. Opinions and insights formed while discussing with other people
are no less valuable than those you form while reading books or listening to lectures. There’s nothing wrong in discussing with your classmates but it
should be done before you begin your individual activities. But when you sit down and do individual activities you are expected to work alone and not to
use the work of others (in its entirety or in part) as if it is your own.
8. The instructor checks your assignments against the work of other students and against internet sources and other published material. If you submit an
assignment that contains work that is not your own without proper referencing and claiming the work of other as your own, you are committing plagiarism.

Grading Final Grade is computed as follows:

FG = (P1 + P2 + P3+P4)/4
where:
 FG refers to the Final Grade
 P1 refers to the Prelim Grade
 P2 refers to the Midterm Grade
 P3 refers to the Semi Final Grade
 P4 refers to the Tentative Final Grade

The 1st Period Grade is computed as (60% CS) + (40% P1 Exam)


The 2nd Period Grade is computed as (60%CS) + (40% P2 Exam)
The 3rd Period Grade is computed as (60% CS) + (40% P3 Exam)
The 4th Period Grade is computed as (60% CS) + (40% P4 Exam)
 CS refers to Class Standing which is 60% composed of Quizzes (25%) + Class Participation (25%) + Activities (10%)
Class Participation includes Daily Activities, Seatwork and Recitation
Major Exams = 40%

The student’s responsibility is to come to each class prepared. She /he is also expected to work on the activity sheets honestly and
conscientiously and to take all examinations and quizzes on the date schedules. She/he is expected to attend each class and
participate actively in the discussions.
ACADEMIC HONESTY
All students are expected to be academically honest. Cheating, lying, and other forms of unethical behavior will not be tolerated.
Any student found guilty of cheating in examinations or plagiarism in submitted course requirements will receive an F or failure in
the course requirement or in the course. Plagiarism refers to Cheating refers to securing help in a test; copying test, assignments,

reports or term papers; collaborating with other students during an examination or in preparing academic work; signing another
students name on an attendance sheet; or otherwise practicing scholastic dishonesty.
POLICY ON ABSENCES
1. Every student is required to attend his/her classes regularly and punctually. Persistent tardiness for more than 20% of the
total number of class meeting (one hour or one and a half hour for each meeting) during the entire course in any particular
subject shall be sufficient reason for disqualifying a student from taking final examination.

2. A student who is late for class for at least 10 minutes will be marked as based as absent.

3. A student will incur an absence for every 3 times that he is tardy.

4. No excuse for an absentee or absences will be considered valid unless the student can show that his absences were
unavoidable or necessary. In case of an absence due to sickness, the student must present a written note from
parent/guardian or certificate from attending physician stating the nature of the sickness.
