SCIENCE 5 THIRD QUARTER

LESSON 16

How does light interact with objects?

SCIENCE 5 THIRD QUARTER

• Describing and measuring motion

• What tools and standard units are used to measure time and distance?
• How is motion described in terms of distance and time?
• How does light interact with objects?
• How does sound interact with objects?
• How does heat interact with objects?
• How does electricity interact with objects?
At the end of the lesson
the students will

- Observe the light

-Describe the properties of

light

Energy is an important part of our
lives. It is important whether it
comes in the form of light, heat,
sound, electricity or nuclear
Light-
• Both a particle and
a wave
• A form of energy
that travels at a
very high speed
• The interaction
between objects and
light determine
everything we see.
Forms of interaction between light and objects

Reflection Absorption
• Reflection is when • Is the
light bounces off an Transmission disappearance of
object • Is the passage of the light wave into
light wave the medium.
• Most things are
through a • Absorption limits
visible because medium the light available
they reflect light
to be reflected or
transmitted
The reason why the sun feels warm
on your skin is that the sunlight is
being absorbed and the light energy
is being transformed into heat energy
• Dark-colored surfaces absorb and
radiate energy better than light-
colored ones.
• Dull surfaces absorb and radiate
energy better than shiny ones
Transition of light to different types of objects
Transparent Translucent Opaque
• Possible to see • Possible to see light • Not possible to
through them but see objects
objects through objects cannot be
them seen clearly through through them
• Most of the light them but objects • No light passes
cannot be seen through
that hit them pass clearly through them
through
Scattering of light

• Light sometimes interacts with the fine

particles in an object and as a result
causes scattering

• Scattering is the spreading out of light

rays in all directions because tiny
particles reflect and absorb the light.

The sky is blue because of scattering

Scattering of light
• Can be a result of fog or dust in the air,
mud in water and scratches on glass
that interact with light

• Glare- is created by scattering and

results to difficulty in seeing through
even a transparent material
